No you dont need a cdi box or msd.

You will need a DSM ignitor though.

If you are going to use the DSM Coilpack these are the wires coming out of it:

Black with white stripe = Power (12v switched)
Red = Coil pack 1 trigger wire
White = Coil pack 2 trigger wire

Of course if the harness is still together the ignitor will already be plugged into the coils and you wont need to worry about them. If that is the case you will just use 4 wires from the ignitor:

power, ground, coil 1 in, coil 2 in and splice them to the stock Evo harness

I just installed the DSM Coils and ignitor in mine. Everything went pretty straight forward. The ignitor on the DSM is labeled also so there shouldnt be any confusion on which wire goes where. I didnt have the actual harness so I just soldered all the wires in thier spot and then filled the rest of the connector space with hot glue. Worked perfectly, I can't wait to see what my car does with decent ignition!

You won't be dissapointed, Just be sure to use the right dwell settings as below. You will notice that the stock AEM startup cals have incorrect values on them from what I could tell.

Coil Dwell Factor 30
Dwell Max 1.00 teeth
Dwell Min 0.10 teeth

I run NGKBPRES plugs without changing the gap so (.026 or .028) with no misfire issues any longer.

Well the DSM Coils worked great on pump gas ~22psi which wasn't enough boost to really test them but they just swapped over quick and easy and I didnt even change the EMS settings to make it run perfectly fine. Im sure i would have needed to change the settings to actually hit it with 30+ psi but I was surprised on how well they worked with nothing else.

Now I swapped over to the Chysler coils. These ones wired right in quick and easy and the car started right away as well. These coils work fine when under load but very light load (Under 10% throttle) they hiccup slightly. This is before the EMS settings have been changed. Ill change them today and see how she runs.

i would think the dsm ones would work better cause the chrysler ones prob weren't designed with any performance in mind.

Not exactly like the DSM ones were made with performance in mind either

The Chysler coils are what most of the COP setups use.

Now to support your idea though, I could not get the Chrysler coils to work very well. The DSM coils went in fine and worked well on pump gas (Never got race gas to test how good they are before I switched to the COP setup). For some reason the COP way is making a very strange thing happen... its almost like it hits a rev limiter of some sort when I hit around 5.5k and 20psi... the car just quits accelerating, hold the RPM almost constant and the boost doesnt go any higher... Very very strange. I will take it back off and double check all my wiring. I also didnt make a plate to hold the COP so the coils just kinda rest on each plug. Ill make some way to hold them on better and try them again.

Does anyone have experience with these coils without an ignition amp? The DSM way seemed to just work perfectly but these ones arent... I am hoping its just some wiring mishap because they look much cooler than the stock DSM coils

That sucks but honestly I have heard of this happening before even with an ignition unit attached. I am still reading the part that you are testing this without the coils bolted down, I would say that would cause some sort of a problem at anytime honestly.

Did you change to the correct dwell settings for the coils? Did you test all of your connections against resistance and so on?

The coils not being bolted down may have a problem with it definately.. they just kinda sit ontop of the plugs.

Are the settings you gave earlier for the DSM coils or the Chysler coils? I ran the car with the DSM coils and used the stock DSM settings as well as the Evo settings with no problems. The Chrysler coils I tried the Stock Evo settings, stock DSM settings (Just for the kick of it) and the Dodge Viper settings. None of which helped anything.

And no, I have not tested the connections at all. I just wanted to test out to make sure everything worked (Hence the reason for no plate to bolt them down). I was also probably drunk so I may not have done the best job. Im gonna re-check everything and do it again and see if I can use the stock coil cover to hold all the coils down for now. The car is now sitting at my new house that I am moving to which I wont be there for another week or so though... Ill find out then Id like to get the ignition done so I can work on fixing my boost spike so I can run the car and make one decent pass for once at decent boost. Im planning on doing that on the 9th. Too many things going on at the same time
