Thread size/pitch question

Does anyone know the thread size/pitch of the 17mm bolts going from the transfer case to the transmission?

Thanks,
Max Cudich

Hmmm most of the metric JIS stuff is the same. If the bolt takes a 17mm socket, its probably an M12 JIS bolt and the thread is either 1.25 or 1.5.

Just FYI M10 takes a 14mm socket while M8 takes a 12mm socket

Check www.nutsandbolts.com for more info...

I believe the 14mm is the m10 1.25. definately the fine thread. I just bought some to mount my engine to the engine stand. I know thats not the t-case bolts you are after but maybe that will help narrow things down. Best bet is to go to the hardware store with the bolt, find the right size nut that fits it and then you will know. Or use a thread pitch gauge....

Yes the 17mm he is looking for is JIS M12. The cool thing about Metric, they dont have 16million thread pitches like US Standard. If he buys one of each bolt (M12x1.25 or 1.5) He'll be set. However, I dont know how long of bolt he needs... usually JIS bolts are listed - M12x1.5x50. The 50 is the length of the bolt in millimeters. He'll probably want one that matches the exact length so he doesnt bottom anything out.. have to bust out the ruler!

For inch fasteners in the US, 99.9% of the time, there are two pitches, not 16 million, for fasteners: UNF (fine) and UNC (coarse). Metric often has three thread pitches for one diameter so I don't see how that's better. Also, I don't think you will find anything but a coarse thread metric bolt at a local hardware store.

Yea all the local hardware stores dont have anything metric. He'll have to order his bolt from the factory most likely. Nuts and bolts.com doesnt have what he wants, I just looked.

In terms of JIS bolts though, I rarely see anything different from 1.25 or 1.5 pitch.

Every single bolt on the DSMs was 1.25 pitch. I've yet to find otherwise on the EVO. I am lucky enough to have a local hardware store that stocks the 1.25 pitch in all common sizes (M8-M12), but when I can't find it there I usually go to www.mcmaster.com.
