S-AFC installed and working...

I got my S-AFC from Buschur yesterday evening, and had a chance to install it today. The ECU is easy to get to, behind the glove box, remove 3 screws and the plastic panel on the bottom and it falls out to lay in the passenger footwell. I used an xacto knife to strip 1/4" sections of the ECU wires, and soldered the AFC leads to them. Took about 2 hours total. Part of it was spent working out my stealth install, shown below. Another part was figuring out the settings before starting. Finally found in the book that our air sensor is a "Karman" type... default was hot wire. Set that, reset the NE RPM points (1000, 1500, 2500 etc to 7500), then set the percentage at each point to a bit less than Buschur's recommendation. I have all the mods they list for their setting, but gas here is 93, not 94, octane. So I pulled back 1% mid-RPM and 2% top, just to be safe. Seems to run fine so far, no real numbers yet to verify.

Stealth install, using the bracket that comes with it, trimmed a bit for more clearance:

And folded flat so I can still use the glove box:

I have a manual boost controller, set to 20, a full 3" exhaust with high flow cat, hyperground kit, and now the AFC. The car has a lot of grunt, and is a growly beast that likes to rev. Need more seat time on the AFC to determine the difference, it does feel stronger, but now its time for a 1/4 mile run.

How much differnet is the AFC compared to your other mods on teh butt dyno? Just curious, I don't have me EVO yet, but when I do get it, I am not sure if I trust the AFC and a boost control (About 1000 dollars) or wait for a factory reflash. I just think the tuning should include some work on the timing. Any Thoughts??

I agree about the ECU upgrade, and my AFC is just a filler till something arrives. The Evo ECU doesn't seem to have much control over boost levels, other than the bleedoff at higher RPM via a small solenoid (bypassed by aftermarket BCs). So it won't have quite the same Plug-and-play effect that the Audi's have. But timing control is a real big deal, as the ECU seems to pull timing in response to elevated boost levels. So the AFC is really just a bandaid, which doesnt fix the whole problem.

I had done quite a bit of research on the TT, as I have always liked the Audis and a silver coupe was almost my choice as I waited for the Evo. Glad I waited though, as the Evo has a lot more to offer me, as in what I need out of a car. Space is critical to me, so even the Audi TT coupe, while drop dead sexy, just crimped my daily use too much.

Yeah I hear you 2Cool, that is why the EVO is so appealing to me. I have the covertible, so the trunk space is RIDICULOUS. it is about 12 inched high at its highest point, and about an 18 inch square.

I do have my car chipped with the APR stage 2 chip. I love it. they adjust timing and A/F ratios, but it still runs very very rich. There is always black soot all over my tail pipes after 1/2 tank of gas. My boost is teh same though, and although the K04 turbo can push 1.6 bar, it really never gets over 1.45 bar. Still though, the ship raises the hp from 225 to 264 just on its own.

Does anyone know if (as long as you don't have to worry about 91 octane gas) you can just order a JDM EVO ECU and plug it in? I know that the higher octane there corresponds to 93 here, so I really don't see the problem. I would just rather have a factory ECU instead of band aids.

Think of an S-AFC as the high tech way us motorheads adjust the amount of fuel into an engine.. Its basically alot like the old days of tuning a carb, accelerator pumps, jets, etc.. And it doesn't compensate for all the variables.. just lets you tweak what is there by fooling the computer... But until a true 'tunable ECU' type replacement comes out, we have to work with it. I'd like to see the AEM replacement ECU finally released.

2Cool,
From what I read on Buschur's site, was that he has those settings that are safe for even Cali's 91 octane... So you just might still be on the rich side of things... Try using his recommendations and see how it feels... I am soon to order the same thing...

I dont know what you are feeling , but after installing the safc in my Evo the whole upper rpm's woke up. The pull to redline is neverending and were the stock setup quit pulling strong after 4500 rpm's, the safc made it pull throughout. Maybe you're not really getting on it or maybe you haven't setup the settings quite right.

How did you guys set it up? I am always confused on tuning it and I always get so frustrated since it takes like 5 hours tuning only a couple sections and tons and TONS of driving.

I just dialed it in to the setting that Buschur supplied, it was fairly straightforward and easy. Right now I am running at a bit less than their recommended lean out on high throttle, basically 1% lower up to 6500, and 2% less reduction than Buschur recomends at 7500. Seems to run nice, and not so much soot on the exhaust tip from rich mixture.
