Temp sensor in DP useful?

Just wondering if putting an EGT type of sensor into the downpipe (near the cat) would provide any type of useful info? I don't feel like tapping my exhaust headers for an EGT probe, so just wondering if measuring exhaust temps in the exhaust tract is useful...

Most will feel that it does no good. Ie, by the time you react to the temps being too high then it's already too late. Already unless you know enough about your engine and EGT it's a useless gauge to you as well. I'm sure you can sort of "back track" ie if it gets past 1800K in the manifold, then maybe it means 1700 at the downpipe, but nobody knows what it really should be.

Ie the same thing as getting someone else to read a boost gauge. By the time the person sees it, then hollers at you what it is, it's already shot past that reading.

Hmm, so not even as a tool to observe trends of various states of tune? As in "tune a" resulted in a temperature profile of "x" and now a slightly tweaked "tune b" results in a hotter or cooler temperature profile of "y".

I realize it'd be pointless to try to react to a high reading (just like you can't react fast enough to catch a lean spike on your wideband gauge, etc.).

My understanding is that the EVO engine runs a bit hotter in the #4 cylinder and that it is wise (if really modding your car) to monitor the exhaust temperature in that cylinder. You can definitely catch a problem (wife your tune or boost) before you destroy your engine, so I say YES get monitor EGT but put the sensor in the manifold....
