i had the same problem with my 03' evo. backfiring like crazy. 25 psi of boost but felt no power to the wheels at all. replaced turbo, o2, hotside, FIXED!

i'd have the compression checked... bad gas + Evos= detonation, this leads to the destruction of the rings and sometimes a piston. this is the problem i'm dealing with right now, 2.3 stroker here i come! LOL
