Question For those with an AMS base tune...

I've been searching an searching trying to find the specs of an AMS base tune. When I say specs I mean what exactly is included in the tune. I called AMS today and had a very interesting conversation with someone. They are having a flash-a-thon this weekend and since I live so close i figured it would be an opportune time to finally get my base flash. Right now I have a catback and just a K&N drop in filter. (So i'm basically stock) When I spoke to someone at AMS today the guy mentioned that they won't do a base tune unless I have a walbro fuel pump. I thought this was very odd and I questioned whether I heard him correctly b/c maybe he meant I was thinking of a custom tune. I told him that numerous evo's get base tunes when they are bone stock. I think we had a bit of miscommunication but he proceeded to tell me that it would be better just to get a custom tune. He mentioned that if I have very minor mods with no boost increase that I can probably get a base tune. I felt very odd because all I was looking for was specs and he really didn't know to much about them. He finally asked me if I was planning to increase the boost and I told him no and I also stated my mods. He said as long as I don't increase the boost then I will be fine. I kept on inquiring about the specs as compared to Al's tune and he said they use the same software. I then asked him if it would add the 2 step launch controller and he didn't think it did. I was really pumped up about doing this but now i'm wondering I should even get the AMS tune and save the hassle. It's just that they are so close to me. I'm not looking to increase the boost with a boost controller but I always thought the base flash increased the boost using the onboard ecu control to about 19-20psi slowly tapering to redline. The stock fuel pump will more than suffice for that amount of boost. I'm really looking for answers from people who have experience with AMS's base tune. AMS please feel free to chime in! Thanks in advance!!

There's nothing different about an AMS base flash. It's just like any other base flash. It may or may not have a feature like launch control, but the tuning is all the same. No, the flash does not raise boost, but yes boost will be at 19-20psi (that's stock, not raised) while removing some of the taper.

AMS didn't do base flashes for a while, because they didn't start flashing until December, and it takes a ton of time and experience to build a database of reliable, powerful, safe tunes for EVERY mod combination. The whole fuel pump thing is just a pre-emptive safety measure to keep people's engines from blowing due to fuel starvation only to have all of EvoM blame it on the flash.

You have one of the two best Evo shops and tuners in your back yard and you are having second thoughts. You are very lucky to be so close and beleive me they will give you all the support you will ever need with your Evo. I wish that I was as close as your are. I have a 10 and 1/2 hour drive to AMS and it was worth it.

Good luck

What specs are you exactly looking for?

Target A/F
Timing Curves?
With the free software now offered that would really be like giving away a service we charge for.

A base flash Is just that. It is a flash designed for a car with basic modifications. Ie: Exhuast, Filter (not intake Pipe) etc.

We do require a fuel pump in all VIII models that are raising the boost. Just because other tuners don't do it doesnt mean thats the right way to do it.

in your case you dont want the boost raised so you really don't need a larger fuel pump.

The base flash was designed to pick up some extra Hp and Torque on a very conservative map. Its not tailored to your car specifically but rather the evo in general. More power can almost always be attained from a custom flash. For some poeple with small mods its not worth the money.

Not all base flashes or flashes are the same. About the only thing that is the same about them is the Software each tuner uses to perform the service. The Money you are putting into a flash from a respective vendor is for his skill at tuning that system. Martin has proven time and time again his level of expertise at tuning the Evolution. He would be the only man touching my cars ECU.

If you have some specific questions I will do my best to answer them. I just cant outline the map for you over the phone.

Some flashes will increase the boost using the ECU's boost tables, most base flashes do not do this. With your level of mods, I'd probably stick with a base flash. If you ever decide to go with cams and more boost, then I'd highly recommend a custom tune.

Thanks for all of your help I truly appreciate it. Right now i'm just wondering if a base flash is worth it with the mods that I have. I hear so many good things about the base flash on bone stock evo's that i figured why not. For the price you guys are doing them for this weekend it might be worth it. I'm just taking my modding one step at a time, i've always done that. I just want something that will give me a noticable gain in power with what I have. I was reading another older post today where someone with a 05 evo with a full tbe put down just over 300whp on a custom tune. If that's the case next summer I'll complete my exhaust setup and probably throw in a boost controller and walbro to get a cusotm tune from AMS by next April. Right now i'm not going to add anything more besides a base flash because I want to get some Blizzaks before it starts to snow. Have you guys ever done a custom tune on a stock evo because from what Warrtalon said (Most of the time I prefer not to listen to him but this time I do believe he's right) I'm wondering how many maps AMS has. I trust AMS over anybody but you have to build up a database and I know AMS just started tuning less than a year ago. Thanks again!
