Act Clutch Problem

I purchased an ACT clucth kit with flywheel from Road Race Engineering of Santa Fe Springs, Ca. and installed it in a 1994 Mitsubishi Mirage w/ an EVO3 engine. I was using it for drag racing and in my first run it timed at 11.203 at 122mph, 1.358 60 foot. The car run well and we were in contention for our class championship.

On the first burn-out of the class championship, the car leaped like a frog and was ready to "kill" Hondas. When, the Portatree lights went on, the Mirage had a good launch but after a few yards, it stopped and couldnt shift gears anymore.

The next day, we brought down the tranny and found out the clutch was fried. The disc disintegrated.

I told Road Race Engineering of the "fried" clutch and referred the matter to ACT. I wanted them to replace my disc but they claimed it was improperly installed. But, I swear, with our long years of installaing mitsubishi tranny, the tranny was installed properly. The clutch kit appears to be be defective.

ACT didnt really cared and refused a replacement. Probably, they are just interested in selling their products which we feel is defective.

So, my friends at Evolutionm.net, think twice before getting an ACT clutch disc because their product and after sales service is NOT recommended coming from a road warrior like me. I am a dissappointed customer of ACT clutch, who claims their clutch could handle 300-400hp. My mirage was only 372whp.

My 715 WHP drag Evo 3 , 730 WHP Evo 6 runs on the ACT 3200 lb MAXX Extreme clutch with a 6 puck solid disc. It is the only clutch I trust to run for the last 8 years and never had a problem with the clutch or gearbox. Yes, the discs wear out after bout maybe 50 hard launches but thats fair for a relatively cheap clutch. It is necessary to make the necessary adjustment to the clutch release point as well as a relatively good run in for the street disc but not the 6 puck disc.

Depending on which pressure plate and disc you had, you might wanna consider getting the 2600lb pressure plate and run the 6 puck disc. Its hard to warranty on a clutch especially if they are so many unknown factors on the way for example way of driving, launching technique and of course possible installation error etc...

Not trying to disagree with you but I have bought so many of their clutches and they are really a pretty damn good clutch...

Your an attention *****, go away.

ACTMAN;

don't even waste your time to reply to this one, I know you always try to maintain good PR, but this guy is lame and his intentions are very clear. I would not give into this behavior

The rating is more of a clamp force rating, not a rating of how much slipping and launching it can handle with X amount of horsepower. In other words, if you launch a car with AWD and 3000lbs with 400hp the clutch won't last as long as it would if you drove it on the street or simply didn't launch it.

Some pictures would help but it's my feeling that you're racing with an upgraded street clutch and got what's coming.

I don't know of any clutch manufaturers that will warranty a clutch in race use unless it is obviously a manufaturer defect.

Mr. ACT man,

thank you for your "kind" reply. I thought the evolutionm.net forum is to discuss about mitsubishi evolutions, problems including mitsubishi parts etc. We participate in this forum to help each other with our mitsubishis. I was just expressing my views on my dissappointment with my ACT clutch.

Nevertheless, I appreciate your "kind" reply. Probably youre a dealer of ACT clutch or you work for ACT or something. But thats OK, its your natural reaction.

I always thought that participants in the evolutionm.net forum are decent and educated men and women. Obviously, Mr. ACT man is not.

I'm not even sure what all the discussion is about. Having the discs come apart is nothing new. The springs/washer all come out and jam up the works. There was a rash of this problem a year or two ago where tons of poeple had this problem all at once. Popular speculation was that there was a bad run of discs. Get a new disc for ~100 bucks and drive it on. For all the bad discs out there, there are many many more that work as advertised. I must have used nearly 10 of them in my 2g without issue.

I'm no genius, but obviously reading is not one of your strong suits. The quote above is not from ACTMAN,it is from the poster responding to your thread telling ACTMAN not to bother to respond to you.

Before laying blame and accusing peope of things that they haven't said,it would be in your best interest to read, then type. It would also lend credibility to your claim.

Call the shop and ask for me please. Or e-mail me directly at mike@roadraceengineering.com and give me a phone number to call you at. There is obviously a lot of missunderstanding here. ACT has NOT denied anything, they have not seen the part. You _have_ seen their offer to take a look at it.

There are also MANY things that can be done when installing and adjusting the clutch that can make it slip and make enough heat to go past the friction material's working range. Airing this kind of beef on the internet before letting a shop or manufacturer have a full chance to respond and or act helps no one. We are all here to help.

Here is what you have already read from ACT:

From: Daryl Sampson [mailto:dsampson@advancedclutch.com]

In our opinion based on the damage in the pictures, the clutch was severely overheated from slipping the clutch excessively. Our warranty covers a manufacturer defect, which from the pictures, does not appear to be one. While the clutch is designed to hold a specified amount or torque, it is not designed to withstand an infinite amount of abuse. If your customer still feels that we are in some way at fault, you can get a RMA # from us and we’d be happy to inspect it. If he’d like to speak to someone here, he’s also free to do that, but without the parts here the conversation will be limited until an actual inspection is done. Please call or email me and let me know how you’d like to proceed with this.

Thanks,

Daryl Sampson
While it does not look good for you with what ACT has seen from the big pics you sent they have NOT denied anything yet and would not with out testing the material.
