same noise here

from what i have heard from other Evo owners its pretty normal and coming from the idler bearing. the car is drivable with the noise so no worries, its just annoying as hell!!!

this is a bump for help or confirmation that the idler bearing is the problem??

Thanks

It started at 20,500 miles. (June 1, 2008 )
TB and auto tensioner replaced November 2008.
Jan. 30, 2009 noise returned. TB replaced again. (a batch of "bad" belts Mitsu said).
May 10, 2009: noise has again returned. Called Mitsu America. Its going back to shop this week.

Mine started doing it right after my car was hit, but I don't think the incident was related. IT turned out to be the crank pulley, it was beginning to seperate. Happens a lot on DSMs. Mitsu replaced it under warranty and I haven't heard a peep out of it since.

I don't understand why it is intermittent. One morning it does it, the next it doesn't. Sometimes after 1 hour of driving, it stops ticking and starts a strange, semi- quiet "shrraaank....shrrraaank...shraaank" type noise.

Mine sounds just like this guys:

im having a similar noise, but its not that metal scraping sound though, its more like a loose bolt or something. Since im selling my evo i gotta try to get it fixed but i have no idea what the noise is coming from

That's not quite the same sound I had, mine was more metallic and higher pitched, but it could sound different because of a crappy digicam mike, dunno.

06 IX here having a noise similar to everyone here, sounds just like a bearing thats bad/dry on a pulley. Don't care enough right now to investigate. Only happens at idle.

Try putting some oil on the inside of your power steering pulley where the bearing is. My noise went away almost the instant I did that.
