Lack of 6 speed short shifter in the market?

I know there is no 6 speed short shifter. I also know Works does some super-duper top secret modification that needs to be done in person and they will not tell anyone what they do (I assume this is because of warranty purposes)

There is money to be made. I am surprised not even one vendor has bothered to make one or discuss this effort.

So, I am trying to understand if there is a technical issue as to why a short shifter cannot be produced for the 6 speed or just basic enconomics at play!

If someone has pics of the 6 speed shifter vs a 5 speed, that would help. Also, if someone had the modified works shifter and would post a picture, that would also be excellent. Our community should be sharing such vital information.

Just my 2 cents - These thoughts have bugged me since I drove an VIII with a short shifter and was immensly jealous!

Take out your stocker shifter, shorten via dremel or hacksaw, then re-weld using mig. Ta da!

But, they have shifters for the focus and 350z(not 100% sure about this one) which have reverse lockouts...

I'm scheduled to have the Works SS installed next weekend - I'll post back with pics and impressions.

Please do. I would like to know why they don't market it - I am assuming there is cutting and welding (warranty issues)

Anyone in the New Jersey area with a MR want to do me a favor and check these guys out:

Rogue Engineering
1 Hollywood Avenue, Building 17
Hohokus, NJ 07423

They are a small shop, but I wonder if they will cater to our needs for a MR short shifter? They made shifters for G35/350z and some trick parts for BMW's.... I think we have to knock on a few doors. I wonder if Kartboy would be up for the challenge as well...

I really dont think a short shifter is needed...when i had my '03 i got one b/c i would miss shifts sometimes (really notchy) but the 6 speed is so smooth and close that i really dont miss a short shifter at all. I would be willing to try it if i heard some reviews but it sounds like a big wast of money to me.

just my .02

Just comments from my experience - what's the purpose of a short shifter for the Evo besides bling?

It's already short (by a lot compared to other vehicles (cept maybe old Miata ).
There's a trade off, if you change the angle of the shifter you increase effort required, if you shorten the lever you increase effort.
When you go shorter you lose some of the "feel" of the syncros and the gates, you're not quite sure what's going on.
If you drag race - the 6spd doesnt have the optimum gearing if you're going hardcore (like trying to find that last 1/10th by putting in a short shifter).
The 6sp is already notchy as it is, going shorter will make it more notchy.
Shortening rods, cables, levers by hacking them is micky mouse IMO. The levers should be redesigned (like some of the BMW, honda ones) to take into account new angles.
I've installed plenty of short shifters of all types, I'd say I was only happy 2 (BMW UUC shifter, and Audi SS (cuz stock blew goats) out of 10 times - enough to just give up and stay stock. If the factory offers a short shifter (like the two WRX's I had them in) take it (and take a look at the entire shifting system that gets replaced, not just one lever).

I actually got to drive an MR with the Works SS in it - which led to the decision to add one.

Lever height appears to remain the same and the feel was excellent - for $250, it's quite an improvement in feel.

Is it bling if the lever height remains the same?

Well, I did some research about this and wanted to post in case anyone cares:

1) Part no: MR580531HA
2) Cost: $141 + shipping
3) Vendor: Spins4 on evom.net

Also, this is the price for the full assembly and needs to be purchased as a whole!

Here is a picture of the assembly from CAPS

it's the way the reverse lock out works. In a t-56 the lock out is in asolenoid in the transmission. on the MR it has the lock out ring that you have to pull up on. That is the reason i am guessing no one has released a true aftermarket STS. there could be serious liability issues if the reverse lockout fails.
