A little too much oil.
overfilling your oil is bad, bad, bad.... You do NOT want your oil level so high that the crank turns through the level of oil in your oil pan as others have mentioned. A crank rotating at 3000 rpms can whip up a lot of foam. That will create air bubbles in your oil, and cause engine failure shortly thereafter. Too much oil is just as bad as too little oil. Keep it between the marks on the dipstick. The important thing is to keep it between the high/low marks. If it only took 4 qts. during an oil change, you probably didn't get a good drain of the old oil. But don't force any prescribed amount of oil during an oil change if it puts you above the full mark. You'll be asking for trouble.
oil drain procedure
It's easy to drain off if you overfilled, just untighten drainplug while keeping slight pressure against it, you can regulate by adjusting pressure, let flow into oil drain pan and retighten after desired amount is drained out, no mess.....
oil capacity seems to be about 4.7 qts....
I regularly overfill the e36 m3 by 1/2 qt when headed for the track because of the oil starvation issues on long hi speed hi g corners, not too sure about whether the evo can handle overfill.

My 2003 Evo doesn't burn a drop of oil, even though it's got dozens of track days under its belt. But I was absolutely **** about break-in.Emre
