Pulled the tranny today
My god what a job. I already had the car disassembled to a point that the tranny was ready to come out. The head is off the car. Radiator out. We really wanted to pull the engine but decided that it was getting dark and we were burnt out from the fight.
The TOB was an SOB. I tried all the tricks that everyone says. Rotate the engine, try different spots. Finally we wedged a hammer handle between the fork and the tranny. That is what allowed me to get enough leverage to pop the TOB out. After that the tranny removal was pretty straight forward. It is actually still sitting under the car and just needs to be man-handled out.
I originally wanted to pull the tranny/eng/tcase all out as one unit but I just didnt see that as being to easy. The room to manuver around is so limited. I know others have done it but....
Tomorrow morning maybe I will pull the engine the rest of the way out. Its only got the passenger side mount holding it in with a floor jack supporting it.
This part took us the better part of four hours. We did some running around getting the cherry picker and some chain then had to put the damn thing together. I am so glad for this site though. All the threads that I have read that helped me take this car apart made things so much easier ( to a degree anyways)
That TOB is an odd setup huh? For those that have removed the tcase as well...is it just a splined shaft going into the drive shaft? Nothing is supporting that bastard right now, just the power steering rack.
Comments or suggestions for putting it back together are most definately welcome.
Another tip for something we did. The output shaft on the drivers side. Once the axles are out we threaded a bolt into the output shaft and attached a chain to it. I then wrapped the other end around a 20lb dumbbell weight and used it to pull the shaft out. No need for a slide hammer...this is for those who dont have one...like me...

You should have pulled out the tc before the tranny, it's a lot easier to put a jack on the front tranny mount, that will pull the block up/forward, and let you slide the tc out easily. To answer your question, yeah the tc is just a splined shaft.
I dont follow you. The front mount on the tranny...okay....what, jack it up? Am I removing the crossmember that runs fore and aft then doing that? For future reference anyways....then you say the tc slides out...top or bottom? I assume bottom since I jack up the front and it creates clearance to come out the bottom? Is this also an easier way to reassemble? Cause that will be my next fight

Yes much easier to diso the tc first....Did you pull the drivers side tranny mount plate off???? This helps tremendously with manuvering the big batch around...be sure to pull it off before install...makes life SO much easier.
