engine blew!
Dealer said they think an injector locked up and caused the backfire. Also blew off the induction hose. They are in contact with Mit. to get permission to replace all injectors. Thanks for the quick replies, I am relieved it is not something worse.

Backfire into the intercooler pipe causing it to blow?

Oh well, hope you get a new set of injectors

They are wasting their ****ing time and Mitsu's money on their goose chase.
Put your IC hose back on and get on the road.

The misfire code has been different lately. It started as a misfire at like 3700rpms. That was corrected with the reprogram. Now it has been misfiring at idle, and 0mph. They said they thought it was the injectors, but who knows at this point.

FWIW, I get this P0300 code too just sitting at idle. There is no other symtom or drivability problem associated with this code on my car at all. Just a computer glitch I assume.

But I also have something (ECU+ and PalmPilot) attached to the ODB port that I can read off it rather quickly.
If you don't want that SES light on all the time you could buy a "creader" and leave it attached to your ODB port and set it to automatically erase that code as soon as it pop up.
Otherwise you have to buy a new Evo and hope that it doesn't have this glitch.

You could do that now or just wait until the dealer have exhausted their money and energy trying to troubleshoot this issue.
