AWD cars make this noise people... Relax... For the last 10 years, I've been driving AWD cars and they ALL make that noise!!

There is no doubt that some have been replaced. I think 3 or 4 here on the this board and a few more will probably be diagnosed. The transmissions being replaced where apparently defective on delivery with metal in the tranny oil and/or making the grinding noise. One or two others are being pulled for Mitsy to look at that we know about on this board. I point out that this thread is asking who is hearing a very subjective noise, not who has a bad tranny. My 93 Talon makes a distinctive AWD noise when slowing down in gear and I've never thought about it as a problem. (only 121,000 miles though
).This reminds me of the Crank Walk "Tick" that suddenly was heard by every 2G DSM owner in the US. after it was posted about on DSM sites a few years ago.
Finally, Mitsubishi's response to this has been exceptional. Service managers are meeting EVO owners at the curb and making every effort to solve the problem. What would be dissapointing is a lack of attention by Mitsy or inablity to solve the problem. And my transmission feels and sounds great, at least for now, and the worst that can happen is I get a new transmission.

Extensive strange noise is something to be concerned about.. But simply a different noise than any other regular driveline is nothing to be worried about.. My GSX makes the same noise with 133,000 miles on it...
Speedlimit, well put...
I am not wishing tranny problems on anyone. And I am glad mitsu is stepping up and trying to do something about it. Hopefully this will conitue if they start to get more problems. The last guy that had his tranny pulled had no metal in his pan. The dealer originally told him it sounded just like the other car they that had. But mitsu told them to pull the tranny and replace it. I wouldn't say it's time for a mass exodus. But it's nieve to think nothing could be wrong. Mitsu isn't replacing these training cause they are bored and have tons of money.
The only tranny replacements that I've heard of are due to bad synchros... Which includes a good friend of mine... Not because they make wierd noise, it's usually something other than just noise going on... If people can't decifer between a transmission problem or just gearing noise, than that's just too bad and they shouldn't have such an eccentric vehicle...

Mass exodus?
No one here is arguing that there is not a problem with a number of EVO transmissions, but it's not a large percentage; at least not yet. And besides who cares? We purchased a high performance car and although not wanted or expected, problems will be accepted more easily than on my wifes mini-van. Are you sure you are buying the right car? I'm not talking about an EVO over STI, for you I'm thinking S2000 or G35 ....... cars that have a good quality reputation and much less likely to have initial problems. I just get the feeling you want all three:
1. Performance
2 Handling
3. Quality
Pick two.

I think the tranny in my EVO is pretty noisy. I also used to worry about the brakes in my WRX until I got the EVO
It's even noisier but the same type of noise. The tranny is loud as I said but I think it's because of the AWD and the generally un-insulated nature of the car. Hell, the tire and road noise is loud enough to wake the dead
and that is in relatively smooth concrete surfaces
I suggest taking the car to a smooth sufaced asphalt surface and see how much noise it makes. This will allow a more objective observation and might point out a real problem before it fails catastrophically

Sacrifice reliability for performance ?
I guess we all know that we were doing just that when we set out on this EVO VIII qwest. Yep I know what I am getting into once I take ownership. I made rules for myself in light of purchasing and Evo. 1) always keep a second car, 2) Try to stay out of stop and go traffic as much as possible, 3) Try to not be so sensitive to different noises , but keep an open ear.
4) Allways remember.... Most Women will not be impressed by what you are driving.

That "cough" as you say has since practically dissappeared from my EVO... You gotta make sure that clutch is down all the way.. If you're lazy with it, it'll catch and make noise or grind... I've never grinded a gear nor had any trouble doing a 1-2 shift very fast at all...
First post on here.
First gear has alot of whine noise (almost sounds like reverse). I do get a bit of buzz sound aroun 3k in 3rd gear. Almost sounds like some sort of shielding vibrating (like a tin metal vibrating). Going into dealer to have them check it out. I have approximately 320miles on it and just bought it last week. Will keep you all informed of the outcome. No grinding sound.

I don't know if I have the same problem you guys do, but I do get decceleration noise. My thread here:
