This noise is a Helical type Limited Slip Differential.
My Civic with a LSD made the same noise my EVO makes, it worries me not.

I personally believe that when I rotated tires recently that the wear patterns on the front tires, which are finally showing some inside edge feathering, are finally starting to create a lot of noise and that this is what is causing my problems. It just doesn't sound like tranny or xfer case, but maybe I am wrong?

As mentioned by another user earlier, its a sort of wooooooing kind of noise. Don't laugh thats the way it sounds..really!
Really annoying at low speeds thats for sure!!

Why not try change your transmission oil to the manufacturer's spec 75w 90 and see? I had some tranny noise before when i put in Kaaz Gear lube but that was 80w 90.. so i changed it to Mobil's 75w 90 and the noise is gone...

some of the rattling could also be coming from the throw out bearing (release bearing). I just installed a CM stage 3 clutch and aluminum flywheel. I purchased the car from a friend who burned out the clutch in 10,000 miles. I've driven the car before, and never noticed a rattling sound. After installing the clutch and flywheel, along with a included throwout bearing. I noticed a little play inbetween the clutch fork and the tabs on the throwout bearing. But at idle and deceleration, i am hearing a faint rattle. Nothing to worry about. I imagine the factory could gain some play after time or abusive driving, and could possibly gain the rattle. As for the wining sound, its been there since the car was new. i always figured it was aggressive gearing in the tranny. or how the tranny gears are cut. they could be helical or straight cut gears.

I think the big problem here is there are several noises being lumped together.

From what I've read in the different threads:
the "grrrrrrr..." sound on decel is normal AWD noise and is nothing to worry about.

the "hmmmm..." sound is the tires and is a product of sticky tires and no sound insulation.

the "bzzz, rattle, clank, clonk" noises are bad and should be checked out.

the whine noises are transfer case issues and should be checked out.

I only have the "hmmm" and "grrr" noises and am not worried one bit. Although I completely understand the hypocondria associated with a new car and the various noises, smells, and vibrations.

I've riden in a couple of EVOs that do this. If it makes any of you feel better, my 91 GSX makes the exact same noise and has done so for the last 5 years!

I have noticed the noise when the car is in neutral as well as when decelerating. When the clutch is pressed, the noise vanishes. Also, if the AC is on, the noise is much worse. The techs at the Mitsu shop say it is the throw out barring. They are going to replace it under warrenty. That noise has been their since the day I bought the car. I also notice hesitation and roughness when changing gears. Almost like the clutch is shot. I am going to upgrade the clutch to the Excedy Twin plate. That should keep the syncros from being eaten up.

For the record, my is strictly high rpm decel, never hear it any other time. If you do (during accel or neutral), I'd get it checked out.

I have a whine from 60-65 mph. Before or after that speed there is no sound. It also seems to be getting slightly louder with time. Hmm, wonder if it will do me any good to have it checked out.

It may be more noticable in third and fourth gears not b/c it is actually louder in those gears but b/c the engine noise isn't as loud as it would be in first or second, and thus less of that drivetrain noise would be noticeable b/c it would be drowned out by the engine noise.

My friend's Evo make a horrible grinding sound to the point I prefer a weak clutch than a ceramic clutch. My car has a stock clutch and I will keep with stock because I can't stand with that LOUD sound. This is the first car that produces this loud sound. Is there a possibility to fix it?
