Rattling/whinning noise seems normal to Evo's when deccelerating, my friend's Evo's have the same noise. Our Evo's have lot's of drivetrain moving parts, tranny, diff, transfer case and tire noise as well all adds up to noises while driving.

Tranny Noise TSB 03-00-014

I finally got a chance to take my Evo in to have the tranny noises checked out and as expected they've acknowledged the existance of the noises, but they claim that is because the car is "a street legal race car" with less sound-proof insulation for weight savings...they actually gave me a print out of a TSB from MMNA stating this crap. I'm still not convinced at all, especially that none of these noises were present until I had at least 7k miles...also the tranny rattling noises I get in neutral are not part of this TSB, but the dealer said the transmission chracteristics change when the car/fluids are heated up and it's normal. They also didn't want to check for metal shavings in the fluid cause that can only happen if they drain the fluid, which is not covered under warranty. If I really want them to check, I would have to pay for a transmission fluid replacement!!!

Dropped My Car Off At The Dealership Today

I dropped my car off at the dealership today, took the Mitsu mechanic for a ride and the tranny makes a whinning noise in 3,4,5th gear when you let off the accelerator. He verified in fact it was the tranny having issues and said he would call a Mitsu Engineer and work with him on the problem. The car shifts, and runs normal, but the whinning, vibration noise is not something you should expect in a tranny of any kind. If you've ever rebuilt a rear-end and didn't set the back lash correct on the pinion you get that whinning, vibration noise when you let off the gas. That is exactly what it sounds like, if your hearing these noises you should take the car in to get it looked at; unless you don't mind paying for your rebuilt tranny yourself. The only good thing to come out of this is if Mitsubishi knows there is an exsisting problem with the Evo tranny's everone can benefit by getting their's serviced correctly. Ignoring it beacuse you thing its suppose to sound like that because its a kick *ss sports car is ignorant. I'll let you guys know the turn out.

It's the tires. The Whoooooing noise. 10.800 miles, noise is very loud. How funny, my Evo is pretty quiet to me. I've been driving street/ strip civics for the last 4 years. The Evo is my "luxury" car. When I first got it I commented to everyone who would listen how quiet my Evo is with the windows up. Some people thought I was crazy. I drive about 100 miles a day sometimes in my Evo. NO complaints,(not even the clutch!!) except the "bad" gas milage and a funky oder sometimes from my AC. If you want quiet get a Caddy or a Benz. I love my Evo!!!!!!

I have noticed a rubbing/droning sound when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear and releasing the clutch pedal - anyone have an idea what that could be?

My decel noise sounds more like "pinging" or "small rocks it the hubcaps" and is usually in 4th or 5th gears....i notice it most on the 110 north towards pasadena on the twisty part and next to the guardrail when the sound bounces off the guardrail....I have almost 19k on the car now and have heard it since day 1, so i'm not too worried about it

i have the decel noise in every gear, and im not concerned about it because every other evo ive driven has it. What i have noticed is that when shifting fast into second at high rpm, i have to baby it in a lil slower then the other gears or it will grind and not go in. Any other gear i can shift as fast as i can with no problems.

Wrong you are, there is alot of people on this thread that don't have a problem, and are hearing noises a typical Awd car will make. There also are several of us that have legit concerns in the tranny. My friend is the service manager at the local Mitsu dealership and is working on getting me a new tranny or a total R&R.

I have a bad clanking noise when I desel in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. I have been warning my dealership to the point where Mitsu said it was normal and the Tech mine did not offer a solution. My local dealership has been very supportive and the technican that rode with admitted there is a definte problem.

I opened a case with Mitsu USA on the issue and asked for the District Rep to give me a call when he cam in town. My friend and I work together and have identical cars except when it comes to mods. He does not have the clnking sound and mine started at 19K and I'm at 25K now. We both have the same mileage.

Well while waiting for the District Rep my firend the service manager called me and told me about a new TSB where they are changing the synchros and gear on quite a few cars that have had issues and created a TSB on it. He emailed it to me, but came across in Japanese. I will post it here tommorrow when I get a readable version. The file name is titles tsb0422003.

I can't shrink it enough to post it on here. I could, but you wouldn't be able to read it. For those interested PM me I'll email it to you.

New Tranny

Got my new tranny put in this week, I had them throw in an ACT clutch while they had the tranny out. Local Mitsu replaced under warranty with no problems they've been great. Noise is gone, will pay more attention as I accumulate some miles though. The original tranny didn't start giving me any trouble until 19K, I now have 28K. Good luck to everyone with their issues. If anyone is having these issues open a case with Mitsu USA, they will listen. I can give you some ammo, if you need. Other cases and case numbers.
