It does'nt bother me at all, I also get the same rattling noise on my 6-Spd Supra and it's normal.

The only thing I hate about the evo is the cheap stock clutch

I've been wanting to dyno matt mine, especially the trunk floor which gets extremely hot above the exaust, but haven't yet. The new tranny solved my issue with the rattling noise and hard shifting. The technician who replaced mine said there was excessive play on the input shaft. The hard shifting was probably due to the TSB on the synchro problem.

That's exactly what it is....
Jeeps sound similar IMO. It's just a drawback of 4wd. I think I can live w/ the noise better than I can live without the 4wd

well,

hi, 1st post. my .02
being a retired mitsu tech, have had my own race shop. the noise sounds exactly the same as the older dsm transfer care recall back in 98 or 99.

it took mitsu years to own up to it. dont expect them to anytime before 2007 or so.
if anyone in the columbus ohio area needs a good dealer for a fix, they dont exist here. Roby is your best shot, the service director is a rice freek.

our local rep is personally inspecting all service warranty claims over 500.00 on any evo. what a p enis.

anyway, nice to be here. need any help, ive got lots of experience. just ask.

I have been having a weird knocking and roaring sound, ever since 4800 miles. Then today, I had one of my guys drain the tranny fluid, and it looked like I had a Chia pet growing. It was the most metal shavings I had ever seen.

I know that I had seen a post previously where the dealership found the shavings and was replacing the tranny for a EVO owner. Could someone please direct me? My local dealership told me that the amount of shavings could possibly be normal. Couldn't help me unless the tranny was locked up basically. Then he told me to have it serviced somewhere else.

Big time buyers remorse!!!

I remember a thread on the person that had their tranny replaced for the shavings, I looked in my folders but couldn't find it sorry. I do know that Mitsu knows their is a problem with the trannies and t-cases. I spent alot of time researching and building a case when I started having trouble. I'm lucky I have a great dealership, though the real reason they got the ok to replace it was that I pursued opening a case with Mitsu USA, and pushed them to get a district rep to look at my car.

I also have a couple friends with Evo's and their tranny's didn't have my problem which gave me extra ammo. In my dealerships case once I started having the problem they agreed their was a problem, but the tech line said it was a normal noise. Short story is the advice to open a ticket with Mitsu USA to get result from another members post did the trick. Mitsu USA knows their is an issue, but they are trying to reframe from doing a recall on all transmissions.

Their is a recall or tsb for the 3rd and 4th gear synchros causing grinding. If you'd like it pm me a email address, I'll send it to you. I don't regret my purchase, I just want it car fixed right. So far the dealer has went out of their way to make my car right.

Thanks for all your advice. I have looked into the Lemon Laws earlier with this. I have done all that needs to be done with that, and I did call MMNA regarding my disappointment. They did assign a case number, and told me that the dealership would contact me within 24 hours. The Service Manager, David Brown, @ Glenn Mitsubishi in Lexington, KY, told me that he had done all he could do. That if I was unsatisfied with the findings, I needed to fill out the "Dispute Resolution Form" in the back of my owner's manual. I did and mailing it out I guess tomorrow.

David said that he had even brought the Mitsubishi District Rep in to evaluate my issues, and the MDR said "No Problem Found, Normal engagement of input shaft and gear alignment." He apparently arrived after I dropped the EVO off and left before they called for me to pick it up.

With everything that is going on during this time of year, I need to mail that dispute form off, but . . . did you do that or what would you suggest, contacting MMNA again?

Thank you for all your advice. Anything can help. I have even thought of traveling an 1 1/2 hours to the next Mitsubishi dealer.

I would pursue Mitsu USA again, I didn't have to fill out a dispute form. Also if your local dealership is unwilling to work with you, I would take the 1 1/2 hour drive. I know most of the dealerships in Louisiana have been real good about Tranny issues, and any type of warranty work on the Evo. My steering wheel was coming un-glued cost $1000 for the steering wheel. Needless to say I dropped it off for the tranny R&R and picked it up with a NEW tranny and steering wheel. I also gave them a ACT Street clutch to throw in while they had the tranny out, and they did that too. Good Luck

I will contact MMNA again, and tell them that there was no resolution to the case # I had. That the local Mitsu dealership told me to take my service elsewhere, before mailing out the dispute form.

Or maybe I should move to Louisiana.

Thanks for you help

I contacted MMNA and they will be having a Representative coming to Kentucky for a test drive and to look over my tranny.

After finding the shavings in the fluid, MMNA is curious why the dealership hasn't contacted MMNA for a Rep. I told the guy I was talking to @MMNA that the dealership already had a Rep out to look, and he said that he had nothing in his system where anyone had been here to look at my EVO. I figure that the dealership's service manager lied to me.

Here is the clearest picture that the technicians took of my drain plug. I saved the fluid, just in case.

So I hope to find something out January 12th.

I changed the fluid out @ 15K with Royal Purple. At that time I saw alot of metal shavings. The dealership said that it was normal. I spoke with someone that rebuild DSM transmissions, and they too said that the first change would have alot of metal shavings, because DSM were bad about throwing off metal within the first 10K miles. The independent shop said that I shouldn't really worrying too much on the shavings, just worry about the noises.

Probably about a couple of weeks with the Royal Purple running through it, I notice no noises. No matter how I tried. I use to make the noises when ever I wanted. I just couldn't make the noises. No roaring, and the knocking was almost unaudible.

I went in on Wednesday (Jan 12) and met with the Dist Rep, the SVC Mgr, and the head SVC writer. It is amazing how little they knew about this car, their "Flagship" vehicle. I went out on the test drive with them and there was no noises from before. There was only 1 remaining noise. (Metal plates hitting together). The head SVC writer said that he believed the noises we were hearing was the shifting mechanism. It is in there today (Jan 17) having it checked out. They wanted to make sure everything was to spec.

They are also painting the mirrors because they are pink not red anymore. They are going to also pull the lower rear driverside door out to meet flush with the rear fender and the front door. They hope that will take care of the rock chips, because that area sticks out a hair. I am afraid how that will look. I hope they know what they are doing.

I am not certain if the noises stopped because we removed so much of the shavings, because we replaced with a higher standard fluid or if it was a combination of both. As of right now, I am starting to like the car again. I would be fine with the car, until I would hear the noises, then it would upset me.

So far so good, I will keep everyone posted if the noises return.
