After recently rotating my tires for a second time at 7k miles I started getting a weird-*** howling sort of sound coming from my car at lower speeds. I can depress the clutch, move the tranny into nuetral and coast, and I still get the noise. The pitch and loudness changes with the speed of the car.

I personally believe that when I rotated tires recently that the wear patterns on the front tires, which are finally showing some inside edge feathering, are finally starting to create a lot of noise and that this is what is causing my problems. It just doesn't sound like tranny or xfer case, but maybe I am wrong?

As mentioned by another user earlier, its a sort of wooooooing kind of noise. Don't laugh thats the way it sounds..really!
Really annoying at low speeds thats for sure!!

I too am experiencing the "decel" vibration sound during 4-3 and 3-2 downshifts with no load on the tranny (ie. off throttle). This was happening the first day I drove it off the lot. The car has never seen 5000 rpms nor has it been hard launched. The service dept. has informed me that they have heard NOTHING from Mitsubishi regarding this issue. Furthermore, they say that they have had NO other complaints about this from other buyers.

Looks as though there is a serious breakdown in communication between dealers and Mitsubishi. Hopefully this issue is found to be only unpleasent to listen to, and doesn't develope into an expensive repair.

They told me that they had had no other complaints as well. I find it hard to believe that but maybee I'm just picky about spending 30k for a new car....

The official word is that the decel noise is "normal" and "enherant to all evo's"

We know this is crap because a lot of guys don't have it at all, and several are having it show up after 5,000 miles or so. I personally think it is the throwout bearing. Mine is now makeing a similar noise at idle with the ac on in neutral, If I push the clutch in it goes away. I may be having the TOB replaced next week, so we will see how it goes.

Call MMSA (1-888-mitsu-2003) and open a case with the vehicles department to have it noted under your vin number. The more people do this the less they will be able to deny that it is an anoying issue that needs some attention.

It's the tires. It almost sounds like those big lifted trucks with the huge tires right? Kinda like a woo woo woo. It's especially pronounced when coming to a stop. The tread pattern of the stock tires make it noisey. If you think these tires are noisey, try a set of A032R!!!

mine does that too, oh well.

One thing I noticed is that ever since I beat the snot out of my car at Thunderhill, the decel noise have gone down. Down to a point where I am not the slightest bit fazed by it. Go figure, maybe our EVO's is a ***** that needs to be slapped (or better yet, a fricking brat that needs to be SPANKED).

I wish you luck man, but the chances are they won't replace it and if they do it won't mater. Mine was replaced at 600 miles and it's as noisy now as it ever was before. My throwout bearing, pressure plate, and clutch disk were just replaced as well and though that changed the characteristic of the decel noise it did not remove it. Techline is just going to tell the dealer that your symptoms are "normal" and they should not do anything about it.

They probably need to redesign the clutch disk like honda did, but I doubt they will even do that.

For me definately not an issue anymore. Past 8000 miles the transfer case quited down a lot. Also using Redline in the transfer case it cut down a LOT on the noise. However I run BG Synchroshift I in the gearbox, and it keeps the gear whine down a lil, and makes shift smooth as butta. Just change your fluids and go flog your car.

mine has 7k on the clock and i hear noises on deceleration in gear but to me it doesn't seem unusual or loud. maybe i'm just de-sensitized because i've heard louder drivetrains that were in good operating condition. in my experience if there's a bad problem with the car it will be fairly obvious. worrying a lot doesn't really help much, you usually end up replacing the same parts whether you make an early diagnosis or not. its only when you ignore obvious problems that you start doing needless damage.

that sucks. Maybe it could be the throw out bearing or sumthing.
