My master tech said it did notsound good and has replaced 3 trannys her in Atlanta Ga and mine sounds worse than all of them but since it is not slipping they told me it is normal to sound like a Coffe grinder on Deceleration and not to worry about it. OK...... And if it gets louder bring the car back. Basically the tech wanted to go in to see what could be the problem but Mitsubishi said nope......and his hands where tied.
I just hope I dont end up on the side of the road or without my Evo for a couple of weeks!
Sounds like you may have two different issues... I have the decel noise but I do not have any noise in neutral clutch in or out.

If it's noise in neutral and stops when you push in the clutch you have a "bad" throw out bearing.

Another dealership inspected my decel 3K tranny noise. They called Mitsu and they indicated because of the straight cut gears that it was normal. I gotta chance to talk to technician that listened and looked at me car. He said the trannies for the Evo8s are very strong, but the clutch's are junk. He said he has worked on alot of Evo7s (not sure how), but he was disappointed they did not carry over the clutch in the 7s. The noise is documented and we shall see.

toss my exp. in here.

bought my evo 4 days ago, i just flipped 500 miles. right off the bat, decel in 2/3/4 makes this horrible vibrating-like noise, dont know if its the actual TRANNY doing this, or if it is some heat sheild not likeing the harmonics at 3000 rpm or so.

also, 30 miles down the road in the car i noticed the throw out bearing making the nice clankity-clank when in neutral - clutch pedal out - at a complete standstill. I am going back to the dealership and asking about the bearing, from my exp. they should not make that noise this early in its life.

one more thing i have taken note, im at a complete stand-still, depress clutch, into first gear and I get a light thud, (about 20% of the time this happens) and the car kinda jerks, like I only had the clutch pressed 1/2 way, or like its not fully compressing. one more thing I am going to tell the dealership.

I hate to tell you this man, but it ain't gonna get any better. You may want to consider reutning the car before the three day refund period runs out. Take it back and have them let you drive another one and if that one isn't as bad tell them you want to swap.

Do search for transmission failure and you will come across a 20 page thread talkking about the decel noise. The dealer will tell you it is normal. There is no fix and mitsu does not consider it a problem so yiu either have to get used to it or get another one that does not sound as bad. My noise did not show up till after the three day return period was up.

I have some noise on decel from 3500 or so, but it just sounds like a resonance...exhaust or heat shield or something like that...apparently some of you are experiencing something quite different.

For the record, AWD cars always have a ****load of tranny noise...it's just the nature of the beast!

this evo is my 5th awd car and none of my other cars have made a sound like this. not even my bm rebuilt tranny in my 99 gsx. I think it is somthing in the clutch and flywheel area. to many people have this sound for it to be normal. On the same note some people haven't heard anything. so there has to be a problem. is just trying covering their *** on this one because it's going to cost alot of money for them to fix all the evos with this problem. anybody remember the lower control arm ball joint recall on the 95-99 eclipses and talons. i do because mine broke while I was driving in my 99 gsx.

sorry for the long post

Well I just bought a new red EVO last week, It was quiet as a kitten until the 300 mile mark.

I actually met up at that time with an owner of a white EVO, telling me he had this noise in decelleration. I didn't hear anything myself so I ignored.

Now at 540 miles I and for the last 200 miles or so, I've been hearing what sounds like a coin rattling in a plastic cup... like a hollow rattling sound.

It only happens when the clutch is engaged, if it isn't the noise doesn't happen. So my best guess is that it's related to the clutch assembly (flywheel, disc, TO bearing).

I'm going to the dealer to get them to look at it.

Steve

I have heard this is the loose neutral sound and it is normal. Dealer validated this with Mitsu.

What's this noise that everyone's talking about? Is it the noise you hear coming from the drivetrain when you let off the throttle that sounds like a cement mixer?

I'm pretty sure everyone' s drivetrain sounds like that. I think the Evo doesn't have a lot of sound deadening material that's why it 's so noticible.

If you take look at any Options videos those cars have no interiors and you can hear all kinds of noises from the drivetrain.

However I'm sure that some people do have real issues with their drivetrain and should have it checked out and documented, but I also think alot of other people are hypochondriacs.

Most have it, but not all. I know one guy personally that did not have it till after he hit 5,000 miles... now his sound like mine did at 100 miles.

mine does the exact same thing! I get the decel noise and everything... its not getting any worse, but it also seems like 2nd gear is now becoming more jerky at low rpm. Anyhow... when all of our trannies are busted, by that time, hopefully we can all buy TRE modified trannies! (www.teamrip.com)

Walker Renton Mitsu also told me this. They said the gears were straight cut and very strong... i think its in the transfer case though, not so much the gears..

I too am experiencing the "decel" vibration sound during 4-3 and 3-2 downshifts with no load on the tranny (ie. off throttle). This was happening the first day I drove it off the lot. The car has never seen 5000 rpms nor has it been hard launched. The service dept. has informed me that they have heard NOTHING from Mitsubishi regarding this issue. Furthermore, they say that they have had NO other complaints about this from other buyers.

Looks as though there is a serious breakdown in communication between dealers and Mitsubishi. Hopefully this issue is found to be only unpleasent to listen to, and doesn't develope into an expensive repair.
