I let the manifold cool for a little while, started the car again
and than went for the tap.

yes, let it run while you tap it. To get more accurate readings, always tap before the turbo for your EGT, as close to the head as you can get. In over 15 years of dinking with turbo'd cars, I've never, ever heard of an EGT probe breaking off and damaging a turbo. Your aluminum head and thin valves will melt well before an EGT probe will melt/break due to excessive heat.

1650F or about 900C MAX!!!! And that's on very good race gas. Something less for the street and 91-93 octane. 1550F or 850C is a VERY aggressive street tune.

i drilled mine using the evomoto and the how to on this website. #2 runner in the manifold. I drilled it so that I didn't have to modify the heat shield thingie that covers the exhaust manifold.

Just take your time. Mark a dot on the runner where you want to drill. Start the engine. Drill a small pilot hole slowly, use some kind of oil (cutting oil) to lubricate. The lube will burn off really quickly b/c the engines running and the manifold will be hot.

Then get the bigger drill bit to drill the final hole. Finish by tapping it and again, do it slowly.

here are some of the various threads I went though before doing my egt listed below.

I have a stock evo ix. My egt temps of the #2 runner vary. But I can tell you ***** out this weekend doing 120 down the main straight at cali speedway I don't think my egt was over 1500 F. Of course I wasn't really staring at it either...

For you people that are tapping it on the car. I would worry about the tap forcing shards down past the bottom lip of the manifold. As soon as they get to that point the exhaust would then push them through the turbo. Unless you do it little by little and are very very careful.

I guess with so many people doing it this way and no problems it has to work. But I would still not ever dream of doing this on a my own or a customers car.

Or has anyone thought of pressureizing the exhaust with a air compressor instead of running the car. You would want to make sure the cylinder you are tapping on it at TDC but this would make all the flow going up and our instead of out and down. In theory this would work but would take some fab work to make a tool to pressurize the exhaust.

I personally bought a second mani for like 50 bucks so i am going to tap it off the car, however I have a friend here at work very into deisel trucks and has tapped into the exhaust manifolds of several trucks while on the vehicle with it running. He just puts a lot of grease on the tap and then when you back it out all of the metal shavings will stick to the grease and only a tiny bit will actually get blown through the turbo. It's your call but this is a suggestion of mine if you choose to do it on the vehicle.

you can take off the mani in less than 30 minutes why not just take it off to be safe?

would anyone know if tapping a tubular manifold compromise the integrity of the manifold; weaken it at all?
