Helix Hollow 272 Cams Installed - No Problems At All
Helix Hollow 272 Cams Installed - No Problems At All
I decided to try out a set of the new Helix Hollow 272* camshafts and I've got nothing but good things to say about them. Unfortunately, I don't have much more than "butt dyno" data to show the gains. Boost dropped about 2psi overall after installing the cams as a result of increased airflow. I changed to these cams from the HKS 264/264 set, which provided a huge torque punch from 3500-4500rpm, but didn't have as much guts on the top side. The Helix cams provide a smooth ramp up through the RPMs and retain power up through redline.
These seem to respond to cam gear settings just like the HKS 272's do. I ended up with a -4/-1 setting which hits peak spool at about 3600rpm in 3rd gear starting from a 2k roll. This is a top end gear setting, of course. It also provides enough overlap for a reasonable idle. Conversely, a +1/-1 setting provided peak spool (21psi) by 3200rpm but didn't have the top end punch of the -4/-1 configuration and didn't idle quite as well. All of my testing was done via DSMLink with a MAP sensor being logged.
Bottom line is that nobody should be afraid to go with the Helix hollow 272 cams. They work just as well as the HKS variety, are hollow (just as Mitsu designed your stock cams), and are very reasonably priced at $400 a set from Gruppe-S.
If anyone has any questions about my experience with these cams, feel free to ask. I've been running them for about 3 weeks now with no issues whatsoever.

Thanks. Anyone in SoCal needing a cam install should call WOT. He's a highly competent and trustworthy guy who works for reasonable fees.
Airflow improved on the top end by about 1.5lb/min, which is roughly 15hp, with my current settings.

great review btw... cams look great!
Thanks for the review. In fact I was just inquiring about Helix 272's on a SoCalEvo thread today. I've been reading alot about how well the +1/-1 cam gear settings do on the HKS 272's and would like to try it on some Helix's.

After a late night of searching going back to early 2005, I believe it to be true, also. It was written that Jun and Tomei are not offering hollow cams at this time. Do you think that they offered them at one time or never offered them at all? Comp cams are hollow, right?
