Evo engine knock normal?

Hey gang...my Evo is a high mile car now with over 10,120 miles so far in 3 weeks, and I am hearing a ticking or knocking noise from my engine especially when the car is cold started. It bothers me, but I am not sure if it is normal or not. Does anyone else have this? It seems to be far less evident when warmed up.

try a search for 'ticking' or 'cold start'. there's a lot of info about this. i can't say it's "normal" because i don't like the sound of it, but i can say it seems to be common.

do you have a rough idle too? I don't have any ticking but idle seems like it sends random jolts. You can feel it in the seat and steering wheel. Anybody else's do this?

Wonder if the hyper grounding kit would really make the idle better ?

I noticed it this morning. Interesting that I'm not the only one feeling it.

Glad I'm not the only one. While it does it I watch the tach closely and listen to the engine even closer for speed changes but I see none.

Valve tick is pretty normal on the 4g63.. just ask any DSM owner.

I had this noise on my E7 too. It makes the engine sound like a diesel. Apparently it is a known problem with air getting trapped in the lash adjusters. You can read more about it here.

HTH.

Does it sound like one of your Honda cars? If it sounds like a tap dancing *****, then it's probably the valves. Valve adjustment perhaps?

Our cars use Valve Lash Adjusters not Lifters. They are filled with engine oil. They are self adjusting, so no need for manual adjustment.

I noticed this problem with my 2000 Eclipse when I switched to Mobile 1 synthetic. I used to really notice it after an autocross. Sometimes it was so bad that it sounded like a mild rod knock. I believe the problem stems from the VLAs not being properly filled with oil. I also don't think that its anything to be concerned about. Its just a trademark of the 4G63T.
