5th and 6th Gear Sticking

Recently I have been experimenting with WOT shifting on a stock clutch/flywheel/tranny fluid (changed to OEM Spec every 10k miles), but I have miss shifted a few times going into third and fourth. These missed shifts seem to have caused my linkage to bend or something, because getting into and out of 5th and 6th requires an arm like Popeye.

There is no grinding, strange synchro wine, or anything out of the ordinary as far as sounds go. The clutch engages perfectly with no slippage in any gear, and I shift into 5th and 6th with the clutch fully depressed.

What is the problem? Where do I look, and how do I fix it?

Thanks everyone

BEn

Whats the point of full throttle shifting??? Just maintaining boost??? Does it make that big of a difference that it is worth screwing up the trans and clutch??

Maybe I just dont understand because I dont drag race or street race......But one would think if you are experiencing problems after "experimenting" then you might be doing something wrong and should consult a mechanic

Well i have stopped shifting like that (keep the throttle pinned and the turbo stays spooled with no loss in boost, makes a difference actually) since then, but the sticky shifting still remains. Its almost like there is tar on that side of the H pattern.

A bent shift linkage would make sense ....but i dont see how it can only affect 5th and 6th thats really odd.

You try to see if it is the linkage, but it also might be a bent/destroyed shift fork in the trans. If I were you I would just take it to the dealership.

The bent shift fork was just a guess. It could be many different things external or internal to the transmission (including the shift rails, synchros, or bad synchro hub springs). Why did you take your car to the dealership with aftermarket modifcations on it? Everyone knows you switch it back to stock before they take a look =) Now your only option is to send your transmission to shep, or try replacing/adjusting your shifter cables/linkage. If you don't know what a shift fork is, don't even bother trying to fix it. The best course of action for you right now is to find a copy of the IX MR shop manual and check everything external to the tranmission and make sure that the cables are in spec. If everything looks good, it means that there is something wrong inside the transmission, and it will most likely need to be rebuilt. As a last ditch effort you may want to try to change the tranny fluid, this sometimes helps with the "notchyness" in the shifts. Make sure you only use OEM fluid for the MR 6 speed transmission, or an equivalently rated fluid. Good luck.
