Evo8 on a Two wheel drive dyno????

Can an Evolution 8 be tuned on a Two wheel drive dyno? All that is available to us here right now in the Islands is a dyno designed for Front wheel or Rear wheel drive cars. Would it be possible to disconnect the drive shaft to get a ruff estimate on how well my car is doing? Can an evo even run on Two wheels alone?? Noob question maybe; but someone has to ask?

Yes, when you disconnect the driveshaft you can tune your evo in front wheel drive. AMS did it when they only had a 2 wheel dyno. However, whatever you dyno you will have to subtract some # when you go back to AWD. I am not sure exactly what the difference is.

I wouldn't, we had no AWD dyno here in hawaii until recently, and none of us dared to even try it.
skylines, and wrx's are more like rwd vehicles. a competent mechanic might be able to do it, but i bet the acd would go nucking futs.

I don't think I would even consider this if I had acd. Maybe you would be ok with an 03-04 but I really have no clue.

You need a way to lock the center diff in order to dyno FWD. DSMs did this for years using welded VCs, VC eliminators, spools, or welded center diffs. The viscous 03/4s should be the same as the DSMs in this regard, and I highly doubt the ACD 05s can lock the center diff even close to enough to do this. But, I have no personal expeience with this on the EVOs.

buschur was selling something..not sure if it was the welded diffs that you could easily do this with...
he was selling them off cheap as well if i recall...for $200 or so...

you can check to see if he has any more..this way you dont have to damage any of your original evo parts

DO NOT disconnect your drive shaft and attempt to dyno the car. You will blow up your center differential and quite possibly your transfer case. The Skyline's can do this because they have an computerized center diff that can electronically split torque and go from 50/50 torque split to FULL rear wheel drive at the pull of a fuse. The Evo 8-9 cannot do this (Maybe the Evo 6-7 because of the AYC?) to my knowledge unless the center diff is modified/replaced.

+1... Nick told me to NEVER EVER do it. He said they use to sell something that would allow you to do it, but it was almost a 1K if I remember. The reason I asked is cause a really good friend of mine owns a dyno jet 2 minutes from my house... and we all know there ain't nothing like free dynoing!!!

The Evo center differential is a viscous LSD unit, and expects to have loads on both of its outputs (one going to the front diff, one going to the rear) however if there is only one side that is loaded (i.e. the front if the driveshaft is disconnected), it will cause excessive slipping of the differential and it will eventually overheat and explode.

That definetly got me thinking. I mean I wouldn't want to break anything or blow ****e up! I would really like to know if anyone ever tried it with an 03 model. And if they did were there any complications? I have to work with what we have down here, but if it takes destroying the car I doubt imma go with it.

You would have to weld the center differential or get a spooled (locked) one. This would create excessive amounts of oversteer around tight corners and also cause your tires to squeal while turning at low speeds. I would suggest buying one of those G-tech things that calculates your power based on acceleration. Don't be bummed out because there aren't any AWD dyno's around, they aren't even consistent with one another anyways. Maybe purchase/build your own awd dyno and be a pioneer
