stock intercooler sufficient for 50 trim kit

hey guys will the stock intercooler work fine with a 50 trim kit. I think i read somewhere where it would support to almost 400 hp. That is my goal so i would think that would be fine. If this info is incorrect just let me know

It will work, but it will be inefficient as far as that turbo goes. How much boost are you planning on running?

Agreed. If you're in a colder climate and don't road-race, it should be 'ok'.

if yr goal is 400whp and only boosting 22-23psi, i think the stocker should be fine.

The stock intercooler gets heak soaked on my car with 400whp on the stock turbo. On a 50 trim your deffially gonna need some sort of up graded intercooler.

I would definitely upgrade the intercooler if you're changing the turbo. If you're on a budget consider the TurboXS (only like $550 shipped I believe), if you want the best get the Nisei comp, Buschur, or AMS. The JDM units such as the HKS, ARC, and Greddy are nice as well, but they're very overpriced.

If you are just running pump gas boost (20-22) you should be O.K.

Im willing to bet that you will see higher intake temps with the stock turbo than with an aftermarket turbo (at the same boost level). You wont NEED the new intercooler, but it would probably help. Most people are going to tell you to buy it just because the I/C is a popular mod that a lot of people do.

As far as direct replacement I/C's go (on stock turbo) I havent seen the kind of results that would make me rush out and buy an I/C, although I'm sure it would help in the summer when I road race.

Meh

I think the "400hp" misleading. The IC can FLOW enough for that power level but it does only a mediocre job COOLING. I think for people with stock turbo it should be one of your last mods but for an upgraded turbo, its a must. Why pay $4k+ for 50trim kit and not spend 700 on an IC?

well the car will be on 93 pump gas and boosting 22-23 psi. which should be around 400whp from what i have seen and read. So should i upgrade the intercooler or shold stock be fine for a bit?

Well should you upgrade? Yes. Do you have to? No. However, you COULD run stock cams with a turbo upgrade but should you upgrade cams first? Yes. You get the point. The stocker isnt going to not work but youll surely make more power on an upgraded one.

The point is it makes no sense to spend that much on a turbo upgrade only to run low boost on pump gas and stick with the stock FMIC. It's a huge expenditure to make no more power than the stock turbo is already capable of doing on alky while also losing spoolup. It's up to you, though.

That is because stock turbos running at 30 psi blow nothing but hot air. The stock intercooler will be fine on a 50 trim, if you are running the turbo in its best efficiency range.

I have seen a stock intercooler on a dsm lay down 380whp/380tq at 19psi on a 57 trim turbo. later that week it was tuned on the street at 29psi and was absolutely flying for the setup. Had to be making 450whp+. What you guys are not putting into the equation is the stock turbo at 29psi blows well over 400 degree air out of the turbo. A 50trim at 25psi blows about 325 degree air. The intercooler does not have to work as hard at removing heat. I dont have dyno proof but I bet anybody lunch it would be no problem laying down 450whp with a 50trim and stock intercooler.
