Can acceleration with low fuel cause engine skip?

Noob question: can heavy acceleration with low fuel cause a breakage in fuel flow to the engine? Here is what has happened to me twice:

- Fuel light on
- Accelerate hard in 3rd
- Hit about 5.5k rpm
- Engine jumps/skips (best way I can describe it. Feels like a misfire or backfire)
- Refuel at about 12.5 gallons meaning at least 1.5 gallons (I think) were in the tank

Does the fuel exit from the front of the gas tank? I've had this happen both on the street and at the track.

I do have a few mods (all WORKS products installed at WORKS)
- Aperture Throttle Body
- P2 Flash
- TB Exhaust
- High-Flow Drop-In Air Filter

Thanks in advance for any advice!

It's pretty common when you're auto-crossing or tracking your car with low fuel. The fuel slushes around inside the gas tank when you do hard driving and hence starves the engine of gas for a second. In your case the so called "skip" is what happens.

that sounds about right happened to me alot in my 2000 Nissan Silvia when i was out drifting and stunting but that was only after a long period of time though depending on what you are do it can cause a "stall" like condition which would cause the engine to studder or jump

Cool - wanted to be certain. Thanks.

As to the out of gas comments, I had 1.5+ gallons in my tank each time.

but it was low enough that your light came on. that means you were really low. apparently, at least low enough to keep away from the fuel pickup.

either way, now you know. and knowing is half the battle.
