What kind of weld wire on exhaust?

Hi all

I just recently purchased a MIG welder and will be welding a O2 bung on my downpipe in the near future. I was wondering if I could get away with using the flux core wire that I have now or should I use 100% argon with S.S. wire.

Thanks

MIG welding is messy! You really need to use a TIG for this...

I figure that MIG will work it just will not be pretty. All of the muffler shops that I have been to use MIG allot of the time without gas. Since the exhaust and bung are stainless steel using stainless wire and gas would be good to avoid contamination of the weld and help to prevent corrosion.

muffler shops mostly use aluminized steel piping...and the usual gas composition is argon/carbon dioxide mixture with steel filler wire

shroud gas is to prevent oxidation of the heat affect zone. steel wire brush will take off any discoloration after weld

The only reason I was thinking of 100% argon was so I could use the same gas for aluminum.

the sound of welding aluminum in AC sounds like frying bacon

i used flux core on my stainless high flow cat and 02 bung on stainless down pipe. it doesn't look as pretty as TIG but who's going to see it. i prayed some high temp paint over the welds and haven't seen any rust for over a year now.

The downpipe was about $250 and the gas setup plus wire will be at least $150. I guess I should get the welder setup for stainless. Do it right the first time. The gas setup is still cheaper than buying a new down pipe if the weld rusts out. Thanks for the input guys.
