Ive done so many of these, i get tired of how long they take to correctly fill. This is a 60 second job that takes 10 minutes to get it just right. SO.....while doing one last week, i had an idea. Fill it from the bottom.......O.k. O.K. sounds dumb, but it aint. I used a rag and put my fill pump in the drain hole and pumped away. When it started to weep, i pulled the rag and plugged it. I lost virtually nothing and presto!! Now the funny thing is i got about another 150ml more in it this way!!! Just thought i would share!! Ray

 

And one more thing, ive done alot of these that are virgins. The factory isnt even comming close to getting these things full. First thing i would do knowing what i know, is have this level checked as soon as i got the car........RRR

 

What's wrong with filling it through the fill port? It only takes a few pumps before it fills up. There's definitely a lot more room for error by attempting to fill it through the drain port.

 

You just said it!!! A few pumps and its full!!......NOT all the time!! If you dont rotate the trans and recheck and rotate and recheck you get what alot of other people got, a half full xfer case!!! These things need to be burped several times or you think its full and its not. There is no error through the bottom. I get more in faster. Next time use a mirror and flashlight to look in the fill port when you think its full, you might be suprised. And you are right, there IS nothing wrong with filling it through the fill port, i just think my way is safer/easier/faster. RRR

 

What do you mean by "rotate the trans?" Crank on the car with the CAS unplugged or something?

 

You should be able to just spin a wheel and the gears would rotate.

 

I've taken my t-case apart before (quaife install). There are no pockets where air can get trapped in. The only gears that use the gear oil is the ring and pinion. I just overfill the t-case until fluid starts dripping out of the fill port. That's what the shop manual recommends, that's what I've been doing. My car has survived 13 track days. I think this method works.

The one thing I've noticed is that the t-case fluid gets much darker compared to the rear diff fluid in the same amount of miles. So I change the t-case fluid twice as frequently as the rear diff.

Of course this method works, if you are attentive. Alot of these noobs comming to my shop AND from the factory fills are half!!!! All i care about is sending them on their way FULL!!!!
