It certainly sounds a heck of a lot louder! No problems yet for me.
Assuming that cutting the airbox cover does not affect the airflow pattern through the MAF, then it wouldn't affect the AFR.

I havent logged any of the symptoms everyone else sees with aftermarket filter systems. One reason I think that this is a great freebie mod, it hasnt hurt anything that is loggable and in my opinion helps.

Does it sound the same as running a cone filter? Do you hear more spool and bov?

I agree. Seems like a good simple mod that can make a small but useful difference.

All very interesting information... I think I will try jscbanks cut out in the right hand wall of the box opposite the motor and on the side of the box.

I agree with spanked...after doing some reading that seems like it would be the best option. Also the physics makes sense...a second hole on the opposite side of the box would help eliminate turbulence for the air going through the filter and allow more air to flow freely into it. Think of sucking air through a straw: by crushing the straw and creating a small hole near the top it becomes much easier to suck air through. Same thing here, I would assume. I am also curious though if this mod makes the BOV and turbo spool louder. It seems like it should, albeit not as loud as taking the cover off completely or going with a short ram.

Why should it be?
The airfilter will take more dirt and moisture with the cover on then with the cover of i think.

With the cover on the cold airchannel will guide any drop of water that get into it straight to the airfilter.
When you take the cover of there is no water because your hood covers it up.
How are you channeling cold air then?? With it off your just suckin hot air form the engine bay..Why dont you get the open air intake instead & be done with it..

Anyone else try this lately? Any other feedback (positive or negative) ?

I've been running for a few weeks without the airbox cover and no problems to report.

I just did it last week, and have no regrets...yet. The car runs smoother than when I used a K&N cone filter. I'm sure the Filter panel pleats, and one right angle help straighten the airflow before the maf. Maybe it's just in my head, but it seems to pull harder up top. As far as sound..Turbo spool and bov are way louder than stock, but a little quieter than using a cone filter. My concern is heat soak in 90+ degree weather in the summer.

Sschmuve1 are you running without the cover or cutout? Where is your cutout? Top or side like jscbanks?

Thanks!

I did some searching... some say you will throw a code, others say you will be fine... some say it will suck in water... others say it will not.

Just wanted some feedback from people that have actually run a IX without the stock airbox cover and without a tune.

Thanks!
i ran around 7000miles with a big hole on the cover and it ran fine, no code, no water

Water injestion is a non issue on or off. Amazing people think the factory dont take the time to test drive a car in the rain.
+1 You guys are wasting your time on this one. I've personally tested this at the drag strip and lost 3mph vs. stock

Another downside to pulling off the cover is that your filter gets dirty five times as fast.
