Stock airbox cover removal on a IX

Is anyone with a IX running without the stock airbox cover? Are you also running without a tune?

I did some searching... some say you will throw a code, others say you will be fine... some say it will suck in water... others say it will not.

Just wanted some feedback from people that have actually run a IX without the stock airbox cover and without a tune.

Thanks!

Should be fine but don't know about the sucking water deal don't know where it would get the water from but it does lean out the car a bit so I would be carefull with not having a tune

Are you sure it would lean out the car? The MAF should read the additional air and compensate with fuel, no?

airbox cover is only there to not heat soak and get cold air from outside if you remove the cover itself its gettin all that engine heat , thus making your car slower at low speeds but maybe faster at high speeds

I'm running a stock IX without the cover.

No problems so far.

About the water : I think it will suck in more water if you leave the cover on..... the airchannel will guide rain and streetwater straight into the filter when the cover is on.

You can also hear the BOV more

Interesting picture. Looks like the pleat thickness is very short on that works filter. Looks like there is more filter surface area on the K&N. You would have to cut both filters rubber off and open them up and measure. My money is on the K&N.

+3 on keeping the cover on. Its a cold air intake. It serves a valuable purpose.

Water injestion is a non issue on or off. Amazing people think the factory dont take the time to test drive a car in the rain.

You can take of the cover, but leave the cold air-channel in place.
That way the filter will still get cold air.

*edit*

and i dont think that if you are driving 70mph that there will be alot of hot air inside the enginebay near the airfilter.......
I have a remote thermometer and will experiment with this to see how warm or cold the air is when the cover is of....

Dude WTF!!! This has been addressed so many times....As for just taking the cover / intake off, that is just plain stupid...But heh if you want to decrease performance and increase the chance of damaging your engine then go nuts....

I imagine in a few days we will see a post "Why is my car running like crap and so slow..."

You are decreasing the performance of your car, but maybe that was what you were trying to accomplish.

Then tell us why it is so bad to do it........

Why should it be?
The airfilter will take more dirt and moisture with the cover on then with the cover of i think.

With the cover on the cold airchannel will guide any drop of water that get into it straight to the airfilter.
When you take the cover of there is no water because your hood covers it up.

Then why are most of the people installing an aftermarket open airfilter when they tune the car?

I appreciate the feedback, but let me re-iterate, I just wanted some feedback from people that have actually run a IX without the stock airbox cover and without a tune.

Speculation, hear-say, should-be's, could-be's... that's all well and good, but so far there's only one response so far that I'm looking for:
