I ran mine for like a month without the cover it ran fine. I put the cover back on because it started to rain a lot here in Florida. No issues with me.

hey guys, found this video clip the other day...thought it'd be perfect for this thread.

(stock ix with airbox lid removed...louder than I expected.

Even with just one side of the cover cut out (ala jcsbanks), there is noticably more noise. With the cover entirely removed, there has to be way more noise.
