What is the Best Engine for my Evo 7?
What is the Best Engine for my Evo 7?
Hi everyone,
Im picking up my new Evo 7 or should i say my 4 month old Evo 7 FQ300 next week at long last. For you who havent heard of the FQ300 it is a UK model with 305BHP.
I know it's just had its first service by the Mitsu dealer but i would like to put the best engine oil in it as i can.
I have always used Mobil 1 and it has never let me down. In the UK most of the Mobil 1 is a 0w 40w grade. So what i need to know is ....... What is the best engine i can use in my Evo 7?
Is there a better oil than Mobil 1?
Thanks for any input on this subject

We normally use Castrol RS 10W60 or equivalent for hard road / track use here in Europe.
In the UK, you can get it delivered straight to your door from Castrol. Costs £100 for four 4 litre canisters. You can order it (free delivery) from here: http://www.castrolclassicoils.co.uk/engine.htm

Thanks for that Claudius,
I have just looked at the oils that Castrol do and wondered if you could tell me the difference between the 0W-40W and the 10W-60W.
I know the 0W-40W would be thinner but is the 10W-60W butter for high engine temps and racing the nuts out of your engine? I always thought thinner oil was better for your engine because it gets around your engine quicker when cold.
I drive all my cars hard and up to the rev limiter and do 1 or 2 track days at the moth in a year. But the car is driven normal when the wife use's it.
Many thanks

Hi Andy
The number before the W is the cold viscosity and the number after the W is the high temp viscosity. 10W60 will offer better protection at high operating temperature.
I'm no engine oil specialist, but I have never heard anything bad about Castrol RS. A lot of rally cars use it, and people in the know recommend using this type of oil rating; which brand is pretty irrelevant. Miller oils are also quite popular in the UK. You can get those from Alyn at www.as-performance.co.uk
Mitsubishi recommend 0W30 or 0W40 for Evos. Make what you want out of it...

I prefer Amsoil over any oil, including mobil 1. Ive seen bearing tests and even Castrol beats out Mobil 1. Amsoil is on top, and always has been. They invented the First Fully synthetic motor oil.
Thanks boost,
I worked at an engine tuning place once about 13 years ago and they used Amsoil.
I just wished there was only one type of oil which was the best you could make.
Let’s give some points to who uses what.

I always thought Mobil 1 was the best but if you have seen a test that shows that it is not then ill think i will have to change. I think I might use the Castrol RS at this point.
What does every one else use and after the 4500miles does your oil come out black? Like some people say it does.

Well so far Mobil 1 is in the lead but because i haven't had my evo for that long im still not sure which one to use.
But what colour does the Mobil 1 and Castrol oil come out after the 4500miles or does everyone change it every 2000miles?
I have read some where that most oils come out black and only the good oils dont burn and go black as quick.

Redline, Castrol RS and Amsoil are superior oils, but cost more. If you want the "best", I'd go with Redline race oils, if you don't want to spend that much Redline synthetics are still quite good.
I'll mention I have no experience with Castrol RS other than second-hand feedback.
It should be noted that UK and US oils are not always the same. I'm not even sure if different parts of Europe get different blends, though I doubt it. If you guys in Europe have the "old" blend of Mobil 1 still, I'd recommend that as an excellent choice. Unfortunately there's no way to distinguish based on the bottle.
Andy - if you ask 100 people this question, you get 110 answers. We personally stay away from most sythetics, as its the "rule of thumb" our engine builder told us to go by. Recently he has been raving about the Castrol RS as being excellent stuff; have not had a chance to use it myself.
Personally, I prefer good old Castrol GTX...has never let me down (though I change my oil frequently...every 2000 miles). In the long run, you find out, regardless of the mods or your driving style, frequent changes with a good quality filter does much more good than "good" oil.
Cheers
