Is this a stupid idea?

I'm here in California (Bay area to be exact), and I'm sure you all know how strict and **** the cops are here on exhausts and such. My goal is to keep my Evo as close to stock "looking"performance wise as possible. Meaning, no exhaust, open air filter, etc, etc. Now, I still do want more power and was pondering the idea of just throwing on the IX turbo, flash, drop-in (already have this), MBC, LICP, and maybe some cams so that even if a cop popped my hood, he wouldn't be able to spot anything. This is my daily driver and I already get enough unwanted attention from the cops as is, but they don't really have a reason to pull me over yet - but if I were to get an exhaust, I'm almost positive I'd get pulled over at least once a month.

I know the IX turbo is good for roughly ~25whp over the 03 turbo, plus the other modifications, but would it be retarded to have all these mods and no exhaust work whatsoever? I know the car would definately benefit from one, but I'd still see a definate power increase overall, correct? I'm also a little unsure if all the documented power gains of the IX turbo v.s. the VIII turbo were done with stock exhausts or aftermarket ones.

Let me know what you guys think, thanks!

u should get an electronic cut out dump exhaust that u can switch back and forth from. Just wanted to throw that out there, i dont think when u get pulled over the cop would be able to see it if u put high on your downpipe. Just my 2c.. Dont know about the power u will get with out an exhaust sorry

Don't get a flash, you have a lot of great tuners in the Bay Area.

Get a nice cheap downpipe with a flex section, go to jegs.com and buy a 3 inch exhaust electronic cutout. Get the cutout welded into the pipe, that way you can have the performance of a 3 inch turboback exhaust at the touch of a button.

Your plan sounds good (I guess), but the Evolution isn't a fast enough car for daily driving?

The other option you have as far as the exhaust is the RRE stealth exhaust that looks like the stocker and just as quiet along with a high flow cat or the RRE rally cat (resonated test pipe made to look like a cat). There's a pic of it in the link below along with a review.

Yes, and those "great tuners" will tune him with a flash...

OP, I think it's a great idea, but you need to at least do something with the exhaust. You can leave the stock cat-back while installing a 3" DP and 3" test pipe without anyone hearing or seeing the difference unless they look under the car. If that's a problem, then get a 3" DP and 3" Hi-flow cat. Also, you may want to look at some of the stock-appearing cat-backs out there. They usually don't make as much power as a full, unabated 3" cat-back with straight-through muffler and no resonators, but it will make more power than stock while helping to alleviate back-pressure, which will be a problem with cams and a IX turbo trying to run good boost.

Im guessing he was thinking e-flash. Not a full custom tune. Seriously though if your looking for a good tuner look up Speed Element. Im moving to Reno, NV in June and im gonna be having them tune my car once i get out there. Also if your not wanting any attention from the police think about the electrionic cut out. My friend had a 3 inch DP and then the stock exhaust with the cut out and it worked great for him until he just decided to get an exhaust. If you get an exhaust thats resonated then it shouldnt be that loud. Try to search around for sound clips.

Sounds pretty good, but you won't gain as much as if you had a TBE. You might want to consider the following instead:
O2 housing (not really visible as it is blocked by the heat sheild)
Apexi or HKS downpipe (again not visible blocked by heat sheild, leave the stock cat on)
RS-R Exmag catback, looks completely stock and sounds very quiet
EVO9 turbo
lower and upper intercooler piping
Xede then you won't need a MBC ... or boost controlling flash
Mild cams, not aggressive ones that make your idle lopey

Wow, thanks for all the replies - I was expecting to get more criticism than anything.

I mean, a full exhaust isn't necessarily out of the question, I'm just still debating whether or not I want to accept the added risk of being harassed. The two exhausts I had in mind were the Apex'i NOIR and the RSR Ex-Mag, both of which are very stealthy and quiet, but add more power than stock. I suppose a cut-out is an option, but I heard they are prone to leaking overtime.

I may just go my planned route for now, and see how I like it. Then, if I decide that I want a little more power, I'll go with a full TBE. The car is quick enough as is, especially for a daily driver, but we all know how addicting it can be adding more power

Thanks again guys, and keep the thoughts coming.

get a 3" DP, and cutout, if it starts to leak a year down the road, fix it. its cheap, and effective, and you can keep your cat, and stock catback for the pigs. plus you can do any set of supporting mods, and not worry about choking them with your exhaust, cuz the cutout is more flow than a TBE.

gl, and keep us updated with your decision.

+1 and I will add that I am not a fan of the cut-out.
