Weird RPM spike.

When i accelerate from 45 to 55 in 4th gear slightly fast, about halfway down on the gas peddle, it spikes the RPMs to 4k and then goes right down to 3.5k. It almost looks like the clutch engages and then disengages. What could this be?

I've been smelling some weird things too. 25k miles on the stock clutch. Weird that I didn't think of this, I always thought I would have trouble putting it into gear when the clutch was going. Now that I think about it, I'm an idiot. Thanks guys, looks like it is time to look at the clutch threads. Sorry for the pointless thread, btw.

hehe, Guess what. You need a clutch.

ok here's my question.... i have kind of the same problem... but my thing is through all gear's... the rpm goes to about 4 something like you said... then drops to 3k and goes right back up to regular... like when i'm driving calm on he highway and giving it gas... but when it's from a roll... it just goes normal... can anyone explain please... i been told it's a boost leak... or a exhuast leak... i have a HKS RS intake... HI ower exhaust... and a DC downpipe... stock ECU...

DO a search there are many others who have had this problem and it was not a clutch.......I know one of them was a friend of mine and his was a bad TPS sensor

Look under rpm spike/jump

This dude is all over the place and sound smart, so I'm gonna try that tomorrow.

I had the same problem, and as im typing this my evo is sitting in the garage waiting on an exedy clutch to come in.

It would rev up quite a bit then jump down, and felt like it had no power, gears slipping, etc. Plus that horrid smell.

BTW My Evo has just under 30k on the stock clutch.

Once the smell came, it only got worse within a week. (More Smell, more slipping) Dont know how long it will last until it goes out though, i just stopped driving it and now im driving an LS1

^^Which can be fun at times.

99% chance it's the clutch. Not sure what MYEVOVIII was talking about with the TPS thing.

PS. This is not weird, heh.

Yea, I only thought it was weird because I didn't know what it was. I was thinking that the clutch was engaging and then disengaging or something like that, like the ecu was telling it to or something. Now it all makes sense.

i'll share my experience, hope it's helpful, i've had both type of problems before

i've had clutch going 2 times already
when it did, when you try to accel, the engine speed increases more than wheel speed that's cuz clutch slipping, and when the clutch finally grabs, the engine speed has to be same as ur slower wheel speed, that's whey rpm drops back down

it happens right around 3~5k rpm

when u take off from a stop, it doesn't do that cuz it's slow enough that clutch still would grab

when i had boost leak, when i go full throttle, the boost spike up like crazy and then settles again back to normal, but rpm didn't spike and drop
