you definetely DONT need cam gears. You wont gain anything from them with the cams your using except to change the powerband. Leave the stock ones in and have your new cams set to O.

264 cams work great on stock cam gears.

I f'd around with cam timing 1 evening on 264's, @ the end of the night, 0/0 was the best all around combo.

if you choose larger cams, then i suggest getting cam gears to tailor the power band to your liking.

so will 0/0 keep the basically the same power band as stock on a evo 9. I really like the low end power I have now.

didnt realize you had a 9.

the mivec enhances your power band everywhere.

I dont know much about putting 264's into a 9......i beleive people are installing much larger cams when they do install cams in a 9.

so what are people with 9's doing? If I go bigger than a 264 will it effect the idle or the power band drastically? And then if I go bigger than a 264 do I need cam gears?

no, you do not need any cam gears even if u went for bigger than 264 cams !

and you wont sacrifice anything from going to bigger cams, maybe a slight lobe, but you should get tuned after install, and from the tune, the sound will be 98% stock like ! ..
with the 300$ from the camgears, pay it off for a tune

happy moddin

Cam gears are great if you road race and need to move the torque and HP curves around. With 264's there is not much moving around to be done.

Ok the only reason I didn’t want to get bigger than 264 was because of drivability. But now you guys are making me wonder if I should go bigger. I don’t run my car at the drag strip other than to see what I am really running. I really enjoy ripping up and around mountain passes with low lag and a steady power band. My goal is to keep that and also be able to pull high elevens with no lower than a 1.8 60 foot time. Right now I have the injen intake and upper lower I/C pipes. In the mail is Mugen header, 02 housing, 3 inch downpipe, 3 inch catback and 3 inch high flow cat. I am planning on getting walbro 255 fuel pump, 680 cc injectors, MBC, bigger cam (this is were the question is), ARP head studs. Am I on track here for what I want? What size cam do you recommend? I am not sure about meth because I don’t want to have to always refill it.

Adding cam gears to HKS 272 cams moved my powerband about 500 rpm to the left which not only increased midrange power and torque but it increased the area under the curve instead of just up top. If you are a drag racer you probably prefer to have an average midrange and strong as possible top end but as a road racer I prefer the low end punch and significantly stronger midrange.
