transmission fluid leak

what would cause a transmission fluid leak? It had an axle changed on it and then the fluid leaked out of the transmission, but we can't tell where it came from. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused the fluid to leak out?

Also are the transaxle and the transmission fluid separate?

Thanks

do you have a transmission leak?

to have a leak.

1. the seal broke and fluid is leaking
2. the drain, or fill plugs are loose.

Broken seal I bet anything.
Same thing happened to me, and the price of a seal is sooo cheap, problem is replacing it...

Good luck

It really depends on which seal is busted. As long as it is an outer axle seal it should be about $10-15 for the seal and figure an hour to two for labor.

Did they drain your tranny before changing the axle? It could be they didn't drain it and some leaked out while swapping in the new one. Is this just leftover residue?

It's definitely not only some leaking out. There was hardly any left in there when it was taken apart. I'm not exactly sure if they drained it or not though.

Are you sure it is leaking? Do you see signs of leakage on around various parts of the transmission on the tranny itself or surrounding components? I had a really bad axle seal leak on my GSX last summer and I swapped it out myself. It took all of an hour and the new seal cost about $5 from Mitsu. The old seal looked just fine, but there was tranny fluid all over around that side of the tranny. Once the seal was replaced, problem solved!

This is why they recommend you drain the fluid before changing the axle.
