100-200 dollars is some cost involved when you're saving up for a house.

The advertised duration really doesn't tell you much at all about a cam. For instance JUN 272's are waaaayyy more aggressive than HKS 280's.

Lobe centerlines, ramp rates, duration at different lifts etc... Pretty much the stuff you wont find on a website.

Cams should be selected based on your application, what turbo your using, and what powerband you will be making that power. Among other things, but those are the main ones. Just buying cams based on the advertised duration alone is asking for trouble.

The best thing to do is figure out your goals with the car, get as much info from people with similar mods who are using those cams.

If at all possible buy numerous sets of cams, test each one on your car, and use the one that works the best. If you have money burning a hole in your fannypack it's the best way.

Change that, it appears most valves/springs set will cost over 200 dollars...

Not much over $200..

GSC's spring and retainer set is $229..

So, all in all, not too bad.

i am going from 272/272 to S1's

The S1's seems to be the best for drop in cams. Best of both 272 and 280 in one. Check out the Gsc sub forum Greg posted good info there, Niles made the same swap i did he seems more than happy. Someone did a test the S1's vs other cams it should pop up soon.

Yeah, I saw Nils post. Do you know if the price on Stikiller.com is the price for 1 or two cams? For the GSC S series I mean.

Any other opinions as well as the inevitible "search" posts are welcome. I have been, pretty much since 10:00 Am and it is now about 1pm, all I find is junk junk and more junk.
If your going to add cams & planning to do road racing I would think about adding vave springs & headstuds for added security..

This is because the HKS cams have been the most widely sold until this point, and therefore the public is most familiar with them. This being the case, naturally it makes sense to draw comparisons with something to which others can easily relate.

By no means does this indicate that HKS cams are the best, simply because they definitely are not. They work well for those who use the factory valvetrain, but are somewhat lacking otherwise.

So when you buy GSC S1 cams do you need a new valvespring and retainer?

Yes in my opinon 280's would be overkill for a stock turbo. I guess some would disagree with that but I feel like the 280's would be better suited with a larger turbo only (at least a 3076).

My 272's had a lopey idle, which with a good tune ,most of it went away. I rode in a few cars with 280's and the idle on each was different. To answer your question I would say the 272's idle will be milder then the 280's or at least easier to smooth out.
