valve springs and retainers? Do u need em

i have a exhaust and boost controller, im running 23 psi tuned by doug. i want the gsc cams, and they say that u dont need to upgrade the stock springs and retainers, but everyone says do it. My question is do i really need them, will they make a power difference. can someone explain this to me..

the reason people say do it...is the head will be apart to do the cams and the springs and retainers are right there and it makes more sense to do them both at the same time

if you are running stock turbo with nothing over 25psi the stock springs and retainers are more than adequate

You are welcome. I ask questions too and I appreciate those that always help me out. I owe most of my knowledge to this forum and whenever I can give some back, I always do so.

Well alot depends on what you are going to be doing to the car. If you are just running mild cams on the stock turbo you dont need to upgrade, even at higher boost. When you do need to upgrade is if you go to a really aggressive cam or a bigger turbo that you want to run out to over 8000rpm.

Guys, boost pressures have nothing to do with valve springs and retainers.

Thread starter, what kind of RPMs do you plan on running? This is the question you need to ask yourself. With the aggressive ramp rates of those cams, i would not run over 7600rpms. The stock cams/valvesprings/retainers can handle a little more RPM's because the stock cams have a little less aggressive ramp rate. Valve float is what should worry you with those cams and anything higher than stock rev-limiter.

If you do decide to upgrade your retainers and springs, let me make this suggestion. DONT run higher revs than about 8000 RPMs. Even though your head can now handle higher revs, you MUST worry about your stock con rods. Piston acceleration at high revs multiply by many times as the revs increase. The g forces on the stock rods are astronomical at around 8000rpms. The 4g63's stock rod ratio is not condusive to high revs.....end of story.

So, with that known.......upgrade your retainers/springs to subdue valve float due to aggressive ramp rates, not to raise RPMs much over stock rev-limiter.

Good luck!
