What are the differences between good Evo's and bad Evo's??

Having followed the history of the car since it was introduced here I have noticed a trend: Evo's are either really good (good hp & torque, no oil burn, handle nice, transmission works) or really bad (opposite of above). Further some cars respond better to mods than others. In at least one instance there was a good Evo 8 that went bad (the Car & Driver long-term test car that had Vishnu's 550 package installed).

My question is at what do you look to tell if you have a good one from a bad one?? I am thinking of acquiring an Evo 8 and either want a good one that I will lightly modify or a bad one that I will rebuild into a beast; either way I will use Buschur as he seems to know what he is doing. I will need to be able to tell the difference so that I know what I am getting into. Thanks in advance.

P.S. If there is another thread that already discusses this then please reply with the link

If buschur racing parts grace your car there is an excellent chance you will have a "good" evo. And if you don't, the BR shop will go out of their way to fix it..

The mechanic

My car quit burning oil when I trapped the PCCV and got rid of the filthy rich - insane timing tune.

Also, Detonation kills the motor like smoking kills people, preignition is the heart attack.

Sorry for the metaphore

Make up your mind. Is it good you want, or bad? Why would you want a bad car to modify, anyway? If you get a nice one you'll end up modding it too. That's part of the game.

maintenance, driving habits, and the mechanic or owner that works on the car. You could put one bad part on an Evo, or put it on wrong and really mess up the car.

don't know if i have the answer but its something to think about.

one of the reasons i think there are good evos and bad ones is that it is a mass produced performance car. i am sure that mistsu does not take the same tolerances into account as to say a hand built AMG motor. so now when we modify them those perfections or imperfections get amplified. then we either curse or praise are evo into one of the "bad" or "good" categories.

just a thought NOT fact!

I don't really understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying there are only good EVOs that have no problems and bad EVOs that have many problems? If so, then that is untrue. Most EVOs are just fine from the factory, of course you have some lemons (all cars do), but the majority of EVOs are built pretty good and won't give an owner to many problems and if it does there is a 10 year warranty to take care of that. Yet that is if you keep the car stock and honestly you have a better chance of seeing Big Foot than you have of seeing a stock EVO (exaggerating of course, but you get my point). More power sometimes equals more problems and this can be the case for any car. If your making 350whp and track your EVO a lot, it should not be at all surprising that your stock clutch isn't going to last very much longer.

Also, you cannot put all the blame on the EVO, when there are so many different drivers driving the EVO. Some EVO owners don't take of their cars and some track it all the time. So the EVO can be as good as the abuse it has taken or not taken. As far as some EVOs making more power than other EVOs, this is nothing new and all cars have differences in horsepower from car to car even if they are the same type of cars. Why does this surprise you? Same tuner, same day, same car, and there will almost always be a difference in power no matter what car you are talking about. Just hope you get an average and if lucky a very powerful model, of course even an EVO IX down on power in comparison to other EVOs is still fast enough to beat most cars.

I think its the other way around

No seriously though, if it is modded correctly, it will be fine. There are some clowns out there who dont know what theyre doing and make the car worse than stock. My car has been modded since 1000 miles, I have 68,000 miles now, on my 2005. Not only have I not had any problems. It has 133whp over stock!

I think what he is trying to say is that are there any defects in our evo's? which years are best and which years are not. My take is that all evo are good from the factory. the car really depends on who owned it before and what they did to the car.but your solution is to buy a brand new evo 9.
