Lightbulb Acetone as Fuel Additive

I ran across this article that claims adding acetone to your fuel improves atomization by reducing surface tension, thereby improving performance and power ouput.

http://www.pureenergysystems.com/new...00069_Acetone/

My friend tried this on a rental car and improved MPG from 31 to 36 (driving under similiar conditions). I have a can of acetone in my garage and am itching to try a before / after "dyno" (using an OBD-II scanner tool), but was wondering if anybody has tried this before?

this was part of an article on wikipedia......

Some automotive enthusiasts add acetone at around 1 part in 500 to their fuel, following claims of improved economy. The practice is controversial as acetone may affect fuel system parts, such as rubber seals. Reports of vehicles covering 50,000 miles (80,000 km) without fault[citation needed] would suggest that the percentage 0.2% acetone to fuel ratio will not adversely affect any parts, pipes, seals etc.[citation needed]

I tried it and found all the claims about improved milage to be bogus. At the time I was driving 250 miles per day and it was very easy to test. I ran acetone for 3000 miles and didn't notice any difference.

do not put acetone in your fuel system. it is a very polar solvent, like MEK (pvc cement)...

I did a test on this too. I kept a close eye on mileage.

Results: total bunk

Driving habits affect mileage more than anything.

1 gallon to Toluene per tank of 91 does the job. I used to run 25psi in my Z with this.

But that is to increase octane and what the OP is talking about is 3 to 4 ounces per tank full to increase mileage.

Correct, but what is the mechanism that would allow your engine to run more efficiently when using small amounts of Acetone?

It's supposed to improve combustion. You can check out the website for more info. After finding it didn't help my mileage, I dumped in 1/2 a gallon on about 1/2 a tank and cranked the boost. Now that was fun.

of all the test i've seen with good results, they were all done on carbureted engines. fuel injection already does a pretty good of atomizing the fuel.
