Another BR 9 second EVO, this one is impressive.....
Well, this morning when I got here I saw a red EVO in the parking lot. Thought it was my brothers. It was but it wasn't his winter car, it is his really nice one. He bought the original 2003 EVO I bought new in March of 2003 from me. Anyway, last year he ran it a few times and it was out of fuel. So we got by with injecting alchohol and running 1200cc injectors in it. He ran a best of 10.19 at 143 mph last year.
He was busy working on it and later came and told me he installed our double pumpers in it (the HO pumps) and wanted to see if I'd throw it on the dyno for quick tune.
It is hot today, 89 degrees and muggy.
I put it on the dyno and put the map out of my RS in it. I had to do some adjusting as the larger T67 turbo will take a little more timing than my 35r and his 1200 cc injectors compared to my 1,000's needed adjusted.
Bottom line was the car made 601 whp in this heat, he was pissed off as last year it made 649 whp. Personally, I was no concerned, it is what it is-as I always say.
So, this morning there was a post-it-note on my desk this morning saying a friend of mine had the track rented from 12-4pm. No intention of going until I saw Daniel having a bad day and I tuned his car. I talked him into taking the car out there and making a few passes
Before I get into what the car ran, here is what it has:
2003 Evolution
BR Stg3 shortblock, 2 liter
BR Stg3 head
BR custom cams
1200cc injectors
BR 67 Ptrim turbo kit-header
BR 3" turbo back exhaust with a MAGNAFLOW quiet muffler on it.
BR Race FMIC
BR 2.5" upper and lower i/c pipe kit
BR mini battery kit
Tilton clutch
Axle Shop Stage 5 axles
Bushwhacker 5 speed transmission
BR coil on plug ignition
BR ported stock intake manifold
BR 65 MM stock throttle body
AEM EMS
BR turbo inlet and filter
BR double pumpers-HO pumps
5-Zeigen, FN01RC's
BFG 225/45/17 drag radials
APexi N1 coil overs
That's the list of what it has for performance parts. Here is the real kicker though:
Car is his driver, doesn't drive it daily as he has another EVO he uses when the weather sucks and 8 other cars. He does drive it though and this is by no means a race car.
Car still has:
Door beams, ALL sound deadening, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, air bags, power steering and AIR CONDITIONING.
What is missing? Spare tire and jack, front and rear bumper beams and the purge canister......that's it.
Back to the story. We get to the track he pulls up for the first pass. The car bogs hard and then goes, runs a 10.4 at 144 mph. Not bad, I can see it going 9's because the car really bogged hard.
I meet Daniel in the pits, pull up the log, everything looks great. He says the two step is too low (same RPM my RS was at) asks me to bump it up to 6800 rpm. The car was rich running 11-11.2 AFR's, so I took two clicks of fuel out of the top end of the map.
Daniel pulls back to the line. Car leaves bogs again but not as bad as the first time. The time comes up on the board and I flipped out, 9.84 at 146.15 mph!! Freaking incredible.
He was happy with that and since we left in the middle of the day we headed back to the shop.
I pulled up the log and see that he car bogged down to 4,000 rpm from the 6800 rpm launch. We are going to go back out with it again soon as it should be able to run some 9.60's atleast.
Very impressed.
The best news is all these big HP builds we have been pumping out should all be able to run 9's.
Thanks for reading.
