Found out what the sound coming from my tranny was...

Hey guys,

A week or so back an awful loud sound was coming from my tranny. Also, the car would not go into gear easily and had NO power whatsover. Keep in mind I just had a new clutch and flywheel installed a month or so ago. The shop I took it to pulled the tranny and found that all but one of the flywheel bolts had backed out and basically the clutch and flywheel couldnt work properly. This also caused my crankshaft to get marred up from all of that heat. My question for you guys is whether you think this was caused by improper clutch install (the mechanic at the shop said he didnt see any lock-tight on the FW bolts) or if it was just bad luck? Not only did this cause my brand new $350 flywheel to be destroyed, I had to pay another $1,000 in labor costs. What do you guys think?

Id complain to the shop that installed it. Its obvious that it was an error on their part.

I'd fight for reimbursement for a new crankshaft also. Take the money and build the motor.

1 of 2 things:

1. the flywheel wasnt torqued @ all
or
2. the flywheel didnt seat fully onto the crankshaft even though the bolts were torqued.

this could have happened due to debris between the flywheel & crankshaft, out of tolerance flywheel machining, etc. so after very little use, the flywheel seated = making the bolts loose, as there was no clamping force being applied since the flywheel wasnt fully seated onto the crank.

it sucks either way.

they should pay for it, as it was comlete assembly error. even if the flywheel was defective, they installed a defective flywheel.

did you buy the parts from the installer?

installation error

the only way bolts can back out is if they were not tighten to the correct torque
