I'm sorry but I find it very hard to believe that rmr would sell a peformance intake kit that totally sucks and produces adverse results on the car as u have experienced, mr evo wins. What I'm trying to say is ..... make dam sure that you have installed that thing correctly. Have u asked Blair or someone @ rmr to walk u through the install process
I just can't fathum why u started anotha post about this
.... sounds like you are dwelling on the fact that "u think" u bought the inferior air intake set-up.
Sorry I sound so bitter but man ... but you could be 5 + more mods deep by now and much happier if you stopped dwelling on 1 mod that frankly, isn't that big of deal on the evo right now anyway. Hey u win some and lose some right. Do yourself a favor .... quit beatin' yourself up .... quit beatin' this horse to death .... MAKE SURE it is installed right ... take it to a shop or call RMR again & again. Ask for an exchange or something if you still aren't satisfied .... but WTF leave the thing on your car if it makes u lose power.
And why aren't a bunch of other evo owners complaining about this.
you're right about the not moving on but everything seems to check....you need to chill the **** out anyways i didnt ask for flaming....and i've read a lot of evo owners with an RMR filter complaining about power loss...

. Your dwelling is obvious
and it's time to move on. PeAceOut!
Ok, from what I heave heard, if you put an open element filter on the EVO VIII you can possibly lose power somewhere (not sure where). The car from the factory runs rich, adding more air into that setup can mess things up a little, BUT, if you run something like an APEXi S-AFC, you (from what has been said on the threads here) can gain upto 10-12 hp total just from the filter swap. I would suggest everyone interested does some research first before they dive into swaping out the filter. As far as I am concerned, I'm waiting for a S-AFC and then I will do it, that way I know what I am running at and I know it's going to be tuned right and not just the old "ricer filter swap" move not knowing if the car is still running as good as it can.
It's a friggin' air filter!
The most important thing to be concerned with is the increase temperature of the air with the removal of the stock air box.
"Ok, from what I heave heard, if you put an open element filter on the EVO VIII you can possibly lose power somewhere (not sure where). "
The only way you will loose power is due to the increase air temperature but it is a trade off to the increased air flow of the filter. Basically you aren't losing anything. It's just your *** dyno fooling you. I thought someone already proved that there is no actual loss at the bottom end and a very slight gain at the top.

The gains are becuase of the AFC itself. Yes the filter helps but it's not the filter that suddenly gives you 10-15 hp. Car runs rich from the factory, therefore if it were really possible the filter could add more air it would be a good thing. As a rule of thumb the engine determines the air flow needed, the air filter just allows the "filtered" air in. If it flows better then the engine can get the air it needs.
Everyone is arguing over an air filter. It is not a magic part for Christ sakes.
Dragon41673 I am not jumping on you or flaming you in anyway.
I am actually trying to respond to your comments.
I am just annoyed by the huge arguement going on in this thread.
You need to get your AFC pre-tuned or get it tuned properly. Just installing it and guessing what to do will probably be way off and hurt performance for you. I forget who it is, but the sell the pre-tuned. I think the Xede from Vishnu is a better way to go, but that's just my opinion.

timzcat....I know your not flaming me, I was just passing on information I have read and that seems to be true from what I have heard here. I know the AFC will give you gains by itself, but from all that I have read, just the filter can bring down some numbers that people want to bring up. It's possible in every aspect that it could be the driver or the dyno they were using. All I am saying is that people should get some sort of engine management when they get an open element filter. BTW....Buschur Racing is the company that sells it with maps either loaded or a sheet with what to load. They sell it for $325.
Here is a photo of an airbox that I just installed this weekend. I am using an HKS PowerFlow but a K&N filter set up should work. I have another for sale if anyone is intested $375.00 (just the 2-piece carbon airbox, no filter included) Sorry, but the exchange rate is killing the pricing right now...

I made my own. An upright head shield and then something to direct the air off the inlet duct towards the filter.
I like that, your price is better then what I've seen else where for that piece.

I did it to allow me to keep the stock air inlet an the air that it can provide. My setup is only the upright to keep some of the enigine air away from the filter and the top piece.
It was not that difficult to make. I used 11X16" sheets of .032 3K Twill Carbon Fiber. Each sheet is like $30, so it's not cheap.
http://www.wccomposites.com/ sells a variety of products, he is also on ebay if you search. To make the cuts I used a Roto-zip with a metal bit. Yes at .032 you can not cut with normal means like scissors etc. A dremel tool can be used too, roto-zip is definetly easier IMHO.
Anyway, the bend in the top peice is simply a matter of heating it in the area you want to bend. You can only bend about 45 degrees or so and have it no affect the structural integrity. If you go 90 it will not hold it's shape. Basically you just heat and bend. I used a propane torch but a heat gun is better. Just hold it to shape until the CF cools back down and it will stay. I should have used a piece of rod heated up to get the bend perfectly straight but didn't think of it at the time.
I thought about try to do a layout for it and make some but it is just not economical. It is possible to do design work and get stuff like this made by some companies. Maybe one of the vendors will do just that at a resonable price.
