Ams tbe with a testpipe is dumb loud. Even worse if its not resonated. I don't know which one is louder out of theirs and the Buschur bullet tbe with tp. They are both dumb loud but make the most power. With a cat though, they are not as loud and don't drone as much.

i have both of these and they both sound very similar in sound, being that the HFC is slightly quieter.... and much easier on the nose

From: City O Sin, MA...the not so sinish part though...
I found something out that was very surprising to me. I had an AMS tbe with the hfc first, then switched to a resonator(AMS's doesn't bottleneck at all, its a true 3" resonator, which is great) and noticed only a change in tone, not so much volume. That wasn't what was surprising though. What was, is that the part of my setup that caused the most noise...the VSR intake. It may sound crazy to some, but its true. I had a friend of mine with an AMS 35r kit, AMS 3" tbe with a test pipe, and mine was louder with the same turbo kit, same exhause, but with a HFC instead of a TP. That intake really makes a differnece.

Short answer to your question though is the resonator, imo, doesn't so much change the volume but the tone which I think makes it less noticable. It gives it a deeper tone which isn't as distinct. Just as an fyi, with sound, midrange frequencies are the loudest and most distinct to the human ear. Thats why you can hear a honda with a fart can muffler a mile away when it gets on it because of the raspy tone its putting out(more mids). Giving an exhaust a deeper growl witll sound softer to the human ear but if you ever put a decibel meter up to it, it would be just as "loud".

I have the AMS TBE with HFC and I can say that it's louder than stock but still reasonably quiet at cruise and idle.
WOT however is a different story...the car sounds like a beast!

I agree with LetItBreath. Right now I have the tbe w/ hfc and I think it sounds great. It's pretty quiet until you get on it. On the highway it is pretty quiet until I get to about 80mph then it starts to get louder and louder pretty quick. The only thing I did not like was the fast that the hfc is not stainless and it is showing some rust. I wanted to swap it out and I was having a hard decision between the test pipe and resonated one. When I was at AMS I heard a resonated one idling and I liked it. I really like the deeper, lower frequency exhaust note. One reason why I went with AMS. I picked up the resonated test pipe and will install it within a couple weeks. If I remember I will try to do some videos comparing the sound. Such as outside idling/revving, in-car accel run, and in-car highway. The tone of the resonated test pipe will be lower than the hfc, and the tone of the hfc will be lower than the straight pipe. Of course the volume (dB) of the straight pipe will be the greatest followed by the resonated one, then the hfc. I also have the stock exhaust idling/revving already recorded somewhere just for a control using the same camera. I am sure everyone will probably enjoy this. I could never find exactly what I was looking for (sound clips) when I was making my purchasing decisions.

Ive got an AMS 50 trim and ive got a TBE with resonated test, and its pretty loud. I cant imagine it without the resonator. Its way louder than stock but i like the noise.

Apologies for the resurrect but does anyone actually have a soundclip of a resonated and a hfc of the ams tbe? All I can find are test pipe clips.

Links will be muchly appreciated!
