Doing just the downpipe and a high flow cat will have minimal impact on sound. Stay away from a cat back exhaust if you want to stay quiet.

By the cable so that you can hook up to the car, change the boost settings, and voila, more power

The stock 05 is set from the factory to peak at just over 20 psi at ~3.7k rpms, and taper down to ~17.5 psi at 7k rpms (the info is in the technical brief for the car). By going into the boost tables, you can hold 20psi to redline

3) if its not safe/recommended, what else should i be upgrading when getting the boost controller.

thanks.

I run with a boost controller, a test pipe to replace the cat and an intake.
This is my daily driver and I absolutely cannot have it loud.

I made 306awhp and 312 tq at 21.5 psi. (added a walbro fuel pump for safety)

If I were you I would run a manual boost controller at 20psi and tune the car.
Tuning is where I made my power. I spend a lot of time datalogging and making adjustments.

If you are buying a tune, it's a good idea to log your drives anyway. A lot of mail-in flashes are pretty bad so you're going to want to monitor for knock etc. (I don't like the idea of main-in flashes )

You don't "need" an exhaust. It'll definately free up some power, but if you don't like the noise there is no point in getting one. Don't let anyone tell you it's "safer" or it's something that you need to do.

On a side note: I don't know why all these evo drivers are spending quite a bit of money on manual boost controllers. All this Hallman and Forge junk. Grab one on ebay for 20 bucks. The manual boost controller is simply valve used to control pressure. There's no need for one to cost 80-100+ dollars.

You can control boost with the stock ecu but the thing is that you'll have to modify the restrictor pills in the line. If you're already messing with the vacuum lines, you might as well just put in a 20 dollar manual boost controller. Then you don't have to mess with any ecu settings.

You're going to need a tactrix cable (about 90 bucks)
and you're going to need either mitsulogger or evoscan
I believe mitsulogger is free and evoscan is like 20 bucks or so.

With this software you can datalog drives.
After a mail in tune you're going to want to datalog knock primarily and perhaps injector duty cycle.

In order to load a mail-in map you are going to need the tactrix cable anyway.
You'll also need the software to load and tune which is Ecuflash (free). You can get it from www.openecu.org
