boost controller with stock everything?

hi there,
my evo 8 (2005) is bone stock, and i was thinking of getting a boost controller. a few questions,
1) is this safe/recommended
2) what's the max safe boost on stock everything
3) if its not safe/recommended, what else should i be upgrading when getting the boost controller.

thanks.

if you do a turbo back and a MAF cone filter and get your ecu flashed you will see very impressive gains. any time you get a boost controller you should get a boost guage and a flash as a minimum. Wide band and a boost guage would be best. Im runing 20 psi on my car everyday with all stock internals and stock head guasket and head studs. I had it at 22-23psi for one dyno pull just to get an impressive graph. I would say 20-21 on 93 octaine would be perfect.

Turbo Back Exhaust --- consists of downpipe, test pipe or Hi-flow cat, and cat back exhaust system. Basically, all the piping from the turbo, and back...hence turbo back.

oh ok. dont want to mess with the exhaust just now, so good to know i can boost a bit higher with stock.

does anyone know exactly what the boost is from factory?

I think factory boost is somewhere btwn 19.5 and 20psi. Don't quote me on that though.

Honestly, the stock piping is one of the biggest restrictions these cars have. Opening it up with bigger piping/exhaust would make a noticeable difference. I'd reconsider that option if I were you. Only turning up the boost will not get you the proper gains you're looking for if the car can't exhale that additional boost rapidly.

oh ok. the only thing is i dont want to make it louder. i like the sound it has now and i do a lot of long drives so i feel like the drone of a higher flowing exhaust would really ruin the "comfort" of longer drives. unless there are some high flowing exhausts that are barely louder than stock?

i'm on this thread now looking for one actually:

hm. so if i can get up to 21 with stock everything, is it even worth the 1-2 psi increase?

Any time you increase boost without accounting for it in some other way, it is not recommended. With that out of the way, you can safely increase the boost by 1 psi over stock (~20psi) with stock everything else. Make sure you get a boost gauge as others have mentioned or you have no proper way to measure how you are changing anything.

Install the boost gauge before you install the MBC, so that you know how much your car boosts up to. With that as a reference, install the MBC and change the dial accordingly.

IMHO, you are better off with an ECU reflash than a MBC ... because reflashes can control boost more precisely.

It won't be 20psi from the factory, should be, but it's not. If you hook up a Boost Guage, you'll see around 16-17 psi from the factory. If you just want to hook up a MBC and a Guage, I wouldn't go past 20psi with out a Tune.

ah ok. so just get a reflash instead of a boost controller.
thanks!

running 20 psi and spike to 22 shows no knocking in evoscan using stock fuel/timing maps. You dont need and exhaust doing that, off course adding one on you can get more power. But the point is uping the boost only will not do you harm.
