My brother, Daniel, was building DSM and EVO transmissions before either of the other two companies, that's a fact but only because we have been breaking crap since 1991'ish. We have always done transmission work, always.
John S., was a certified mechanic for Jeep for a long time and started doing his own transmisions too. John S. got EXTREMELY fast and made a very good name for himself building transmissions. So much so that we were no longer considered when someone needed a trans built, they went to John S. We quit promoting it. We still to this day send most of the DSM trans work over to John S. to have them built. He has gone further and faster with the DSM trans than anyone else, end of story.
I have never had one of John S's transmissions in my RS. He did built a T-case for me though and it is still in the car. He simply re-shimmed a brand new one I sent to him.
I had a trans that TRE built in my RS at one time. The syncro's went bad after running it for awhile and I have it sitting here at the shop for a spare for the car, still un-rebuilt.
Right now my car is running a transmission in it that Daniel did here at the shop and it has lasted longer than any other.
Do the transmission break? Of course, EVERYONE's does. The bottom line though is the EVO trans is excellent and does not need a million dollars in parts added to it. It just needs a few key parts and fresh syncro's from time to time.
If it weren't for Daniel doing them here at our shop I would use John for my EVO trans, I just don't need to.

Ummm...on the contrary, John Shepherd IS A PIONEER of the highest form. He was the first to start doing performance transmission rebuilds of the AWD 4G63 platform, and is even today holds the AWD 4G63 track record (well under 8 seconds). The man knows these transmissions *BETTER* than anyone else. It is hard to argue against his 7 second timeslip. If you think differently, I ask you this:
Who has gone faster?
Who has gone faster?

I don't think it matters who's gone faster. Anyone with a thourough understanding of transmissions and metalurgy can construct a stout transmission. Because he's run 7's doesn't mean he's the only good trans builder.
