Because the floater plate, that resides between the two clutch discs, has to have some clearance so it doesn't hang up and cause notchy shifting. It needs that wiggle room.

Some twin discs make more rattle noise than others due to many things, such as how it was designed, materials used and how much mass the parts have.

Lightweight clutch assemblies will tend to rattle more at idle because the engine's power strokes are happening less often. This is merely a cause & effect and a trade off one must consider when using a racing clutch.

On a side note....I just answered the phone today, really, and this poor guy had a shop install a new racey twin disc clutch. The clutch never released properly and it was hard to get into gear, really notchy shifting and after a few hundred miles of him driving the F$%! out of it the transmission started to grind when he would shift gears. Why? Because the shop never bothered to adjust his clutch and eventually it wore out the synchronizers. Guys & Gals, if you just installed a clutch and the transmission doesn't shift right you need to get it adjusted correctly. There's a really good write-up in the "How to" section of this forum that shows you how to do it yourself.

While we're here I'd like to chime in to say that I rebuilt my first Mitsubishi transmission in 1984 for my 84 Dodge Colt GTS Turbo, yeah the 8 speed transmission at that. Some of you that have stopped by have seen that car too. Like many of you, I also beat the life out of my car and broke the transmission and Mitsubishi wouldn't fix it under warranty. As a matter of fact I even have parts for them and still rebuild them for people to this day. Should that matter to you? Probably not.

Sorry about that, I am used to dealing with shops that actually give you good information before you buy.

I have a Stg3 Shep trans for my current DSM. I am gonna try to sell it and look towards upgrading to the Shep dogbox.

I have driven both trans and can tell you it doesnt make a difference. both do unbelievable work so there really isnt a who is better question. just make a decision on time and cost and you wont be upset from either company.

6spd's are uses the 4 5 6 gears are just smaller and will not handle the tq, nothing you can really do for them right now.

^Right, 1st and 2nd gear or the 6-spd are stronger.

You can shot peen and cryo-treat the tranny to make it stronger. TRE may take a little more time but can cost less. Or shep with less time but pricier. They're both good.

I've had very good experiences with TRE. Haven't tried Shep, and I don't have a reason to try Shep based on my experiences with TRE. First was an LSD for the front diff., called him, left a message and got a return call same day, ordered part and it was all done including shipping in less than a week. Next experience, rebuild of an 03 tranny. Emailed my setup and needs, got a return phone call from Jon next day (today), talked it over at length, and I have round trip tranny box headed my way to ship tranny to TRE. Jon knows his stuff. Again, not knocking Shep, but all this talk about Jon being hard to reach isn't my experience. Plus, his stage 2 upgrade is the schnit!!!!
