Boost
Boost
i bought my evo mr two weeks ago, and just installed a boost gauge. My car is boosting like 25+psi. Wondering if thats factory boost? Is that too much boost with everything stock? Please any feedback would be great. thanks.
I might be boosting too much then. the engine has HKS 272 cams, but everything else is stock. The previous owner had taken everything off except for the cams. So now I know why my car feels like i hit a brick wall at 4-5 rpm's.

25psi is well over stock, I wonder if you were getting knock and timing pulled at 4-5000rpm's... that would explain the "brick wall" or you hit fuel cut.
I run 24psi daily but I'm tuned for it so it's a non issue.

Mellon, I'm heading down to your neck of the woods sometime next week. Im going to visiting my parents out in nashville, and I was wondering if we can set up a date to bring my car in for some tuning. How much do you charge for a flash tuned?
There was a time when I ran with just cams, everything else stock. Spiked at 19-20psi. Yes, brick wall sounds like fuel cut. If your positive it doesn't have a boost controller, maybe the boost lines are modified or an upgraded wastegate?

let's get some private messaging going to see if I can be available for you.
No boost controller yet. I haven't installed it just yet, and also I haven't installed my TBE, and fuel pump. I'm not really sure what the previous owner did to the car, but it runs pretty strong. I'm guessing it was a repo car. '05 EVO MR with 15,000 miles. I already blew the head gasket the 1st week owning the car, replaced the head gasket, and its time to get a tune. But not sure who to take it to. There is too many option around my area that does ECU Flash Tuning.
Itīs almost a given that whoever had the car before you, was running a boost controller or had modified ECU/BCS control. In which case, they probably didnīt hook the vacuum/boost lines back up in the original factory spec fashion before selling it to you. Also the lines could be routed correctly but be missing a couple of little internal restrictor orifices.
For about $17.00 you can get the original vacuum/boost hose assembly from the dealer, as it is a Mitsubishi part. Either replace the entire assembly, or install a boost controller(manual is simplest). There are install instructions in the How-To Forum and threads with pictures and if you search youīll find gobs of info on how to install the boost controller or the original boost/vacuum assembly.
This isnīt rocket science. There are no secret techniques and no mystical path. However, first and foremost, get your boost under control and do it soon. You definitely donīt want to be replacing headgaskets or worse. After getting the boost under control, then get a tune or a flash or whatever. But, first see to the overboost problem.

There can never be too many options...
There's definitely a lot to choose from in the Northeast, such as Dynoflash in Connecticut.
If you're running 25psi, then there's a high probability the car was not put back to stock as you think. If you think it's a repo, which means you don't know and didn't buy it from the previous owner, then you have no idea what the guy did. I highly doubt it's stock except for the cams, and I highly doubt it was put back together properly. If you blew the head gasket, that car is a disaster waiting to happen. I would immediately take it to someone who knows at least the basics (you didn't know 25psi wasn't stock, which means you don't know the basics, and don't know how to search) and can look the car over. I'd then get that person to put the boost system back to stock using the OEM boost lines, which you will probably have to purchase at Mitsubishiparts.net for $15 unless you plan to get an MBC, in which case you should do that ASAP and not boost again until then.

We need more info. Did you buy it used? Was it modified? Since you say you got it two weeks ago and its an 05 MR I'm going to assume its used. What type of boost gauge is it? Some boost gauges are very inaccurate.
