Evo turbo timer?

Can someone with an Evo educate me on whether or not the Evos require, or is recommended to have a turbo timer (timer for engine shutdown)? I know for sure a stock turbo doesn't require such a thing, however, at what point or stage in the modification process is it recommended to have one? Any insight would help.

The main reason people get turbo timer is so that they do not have to wait for about a minute for the turbo to wind down. Just take your key, lock the car, and walk away. The timer will shut the engine down by itself.

You can do that by waiting for about a minute before turning off the engine.

I think it is illegal for some states.

FYI, i'm not a newbie and I know what a turbo timer is, my question is at what point does the Evo need this setup...(hence, it was directed to Evo owners from their personal experience)

anyhow, thanks for the response at least

It definitely wouldn't hurt to install the turbo timer right after you drive the car off the dealer's lot.

Ya that's what I was going to do first thing...I'm not patient enough to wait for a turbo to cool off myself

I hear some people does not let the turbo wind down on low boost turbo cars. They said they do not rev their car, so that is the reason they do not wait a little.

Wonder if that can potentially damage the turbo or not. Any comment?

Well you get two flavors of turbo Timers. (1) Manual Turbo Timers (2) Full Auto Turbo Timers. In turbo charged cars the turbo is cooled by the same oil that circulates to cool the engine. When you drive a turbo car hard, the temperatures of the Turbo unit rise to VERY high temperatures. The oil circulating around the Turbo keeps the impeller blades from bending at these high temperatures. So it is a MUST to have a turbo timer unless you wanna pay the price of changing your turbo unit often. The Fully automatic turbo timer adjusts the engine idle time once you remove the key from the ignition depending on how hard you've driven the car. The manual turbo allows you to set the number of minutes (1-10) that you want the engine to be idle. I have a Fully automatic Blitz Turbo Timer in my Evo that keeps those titanium alloy blades intact!!!.

Hope this helps!

Good insight, I thought of this as well... I assume for best assurance waiting for the turbo to cool down will result in lasting engine life, however, I have a friend who has a 340+ eclipse and doesn't give a damn whether his ride cools off or what not

I feel that a turbo timer on a turbo car, is a required step in protecting your investment. Obviously we know we all have turbo charged cars? You want to do everything and anything to protect it, right? So wait a min or two, or get a turbo timer. I wait to shut my car down even if I only drove it 5 mins. and didnt even boost it. You never know what could happen so Im very picky about this. For me a turbo timer is a must, not a option.
