All Evos whine a little right?
I'm on my 2nd IX MR, and like all other Evo's both of mine had/have their share of minor squeeks and rattles depending on the temp and/or road surface, BUT I have never heard a whining noise in either of my Evo's in any of the 6 gears. However, my 2nd one does have that random metal scraping noise coming from behind the timing belt cover that seems to be pretty symptomatic with the IX's, so I guess it's like 6 of one, or half a dozen of another. Yay Mitsubishi.
I had that similar whine in 1st and 2nd gear when driving at parking lot speeds when I first got my evo. I changed out fluids to some fresh diaqueen with no change. After I swapped that out for amsoil it went away. Never hear that noise again. Mine was more on decel/coasting in 2nd though ~10mph
Mine has whined since new in 1st and 2nd gear, then immediately shuts up when you go to third. 82K miles and hasn't blown up yet (knock on wood), so you'll be ok. T-case failure is very apparent, I had mine replaced under warranty at around 40K miles and when it went bad, I immediately knew. You'll get a loud whine that gets progressively louder with speed. If you don't have that, you're fine.
I have 1st/2nd gear whine, slight decel whine in the 20-50mph range and a very very very faint whine on the highway. It's been that way forever and I'm convinced, after owning two Evo's ALL Evo's own a little bit. My fathers MR also has a slight whine on the highway.
I've worked on Evo's with the death whine, it's unmistakable.

my 9 whines at accel or decel in first, not in any other gear. it had a little 2nd gear low speed whine, and overall very noisy drivetrain which i thought was normal when i bought it 2 weeks ago... till i changed the fluids (had 25k on them) last week and it made a drastic change.
